I know so many people who have gained access to Melbourne High but instead have turned it down and stayed at their respective private schools. This made me wonder is MacRob/ Melb High just for smart kids whose parents are poor?

There aren't so many kids from the "elite" schools, but I wouldn't call them "poor" either.

whose parents are RICH.

rich ppl are smart, smart ppl educate their children well, well educated children are more likely to do well, doing well gets them into macrob + melb high, and they are likely to be deemed as smart kids.
well the limit can turn into a threshold..

Uh, what's with this?

Not too many girls at Mac.Rob are truly poor. Check the myschool statistics in terms of income. Some of the top performers come from rich families - a friend of mine who scored amazing year 11 results lives in Toorak.

Somebody from school got into Macrob, went for a year, hated it, and came back to our pretty average public school and stayed until we graduated.

And just because somebody cannot afford to attend a private school, it doesn't mean they're 'poor'.

They may have turned it down and stayed at their respective private schools since they have massive scholarships. It is after all, possible to get a scholarship such that tuition fees at a high-end private school are lower than the tuition fees for MHS/MacRob.

I don't think so because they're both located in the city so most of the kids that go there probably live in the inner suburbs.

Most kids take the train from varying distances. An hour one way on public transport is pretty normal

Just because people don't want to pay for private schools doesn't make them poor. Almost all of my friends were very well off and could have easily afforded private schools if they thought it to be worth it. Most just realise that the price you pay isn't worth it considering you can get an almost equivalent, or even better result for free at MHS. I had other friends who figured they might as well save the money and spend it on tuition instead. But yeh, coming to the conclusion of poor is quite naive really.

Well being a State school, you don't really have to pay anything. So I doubt that unless they somehow get a 100% scholarship :P

Not really. Plenty of people travel quite far to get there. Even had someone take V/Line down here for a 2.5 hour trip each way in my year level. And while that doesn't really confirm anything, from what I know, most lived in mid-suburban areas. Think Springvale, Dandenong, Box Hill, Doncaster, Glenny etc.

Family social status could well reflect on one's success in a education system like VCE. It can be generalised that parents with higher income have a greater concern for education thus pushing their children to a higher standard (or they can just be asian :p). Private schools are ideal for VCE as they spoon feed their students with lots of information where else public schoolers like me have to scavenge places like this forum and beg friends from other schools for their resources. Melb high's resources are better than most public schools but cannot compete with private schools.
