Not really. Plenty of people travel quite far to get there. Even had someone take V/Line down here for a 2.5 hour trip each way in my year level. And while that doesn't really confirm anything, from what I know, most lived in mid-suburban areas. Think Springvale, Dandenong, Box Hill, Doncaster, Glenny etc.

I'd say the glenny line has the most MHS/MacRob students.

Err, I don't think you can say poor but maybe those that don't want to spend too much, think its not worth it or maybe just because they are quite close to south yarra would go there I guess.

I dont know but i  get the feeling heaps of people at McRob and Melbourne high arent doing it exceedingly tough.

Because of the nature of the selective entry exam, you usually have some form of tutoring (well my mate did anyway, so that means you have at least a little cash to spare).

I think it would really be a mix of people from all scioeconimic areas.. more towards the higher than the lower end though. Im sure some people have the attitude that its like a "free" private school and i sort of have this perception too.

I actually believe the lilydale/belgrave line have more MHS/MacRob students :D

Speaking about MHS, there are a small handful of students in each year level who you could classify as poor (one of my good friends in fact probably fits this category), but i find the majority of students there are either doing alright economically.

The generalisation that the rich do better is SLIGHTLY understandable, but what about those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds that are motivated to do well in life and be successful? I know lots of doctors who started from nothing but wanted to have a better life for themselves and their families.

Anyways, only thing I think is that rich people can afford lots of tutoring.

Now that is dedication.

I don't think so because they're both located in the city so most of the kids that go there probably live in the inner suburbs.

Most kids take the train from varying distances. An hour one way on public transport is pretty normal

At uni, someone I do physics with comes from geelong (he went to a school there and got an ENTER of 98) to the uni and he says that is roughly an hour. If I catch public transport from my house (in Blackburn) it can take between 40 minutes to 1 hour.

Family social status could well reflect on one's success in a education system like VCE. It can be generalised that parents with higher income have a greater concern for education thus pushing their children to a higher standard (or they can just be asian :p). Private schools are ideal for VCE as they spoon feed their students with lots of information where else public schoolers like me have to scavenge places like this forum and beg friends from other schools for their resources. Melb high's resources are better than most public schools but cannot compete with private schools.

I beg to differ since that school is usually among the top 2 or 3 schools in terms of results.

But I agree with the family part since there is a correlation. I even believe that having an older sibling who has done year 12 will raise someone's ENTER. I didn't realise what a good ENTER was until around year 11, but my sisters in year 9 already have a good idea of what that is. Anyway I can't wait to see how they go!

I think that also involves the older family member actually wanting a good ENTER score. My brother went before me and got a 69, but he didn't give two shits about school. Then when I came I had the same attitude till year 12 when I realised what I wanted to do, now my little bro wants 99.95 and knows exactly what subjects and shit to do lol (he's year 7)
