Golden Key International Honour Society

I was just wondering if anyone else has recently got an invitation letter to join the Golden Key International Honour Society or if anyone is already member, and if they know what it is about and if it is worth joining.
Thanks.

People with a HD average get invited to join.
Once you join you're a member for life; it doesn't matter if your average ends up falling below HD.

AFAIK, not much happens... I've a few friends in Golden Key @ Monash (one was the treasurer last year), and I really think people who are invited just join for the exclusivity.

They don't do anything really. My bro's in it and he said he just enjoys putting it on his CV.

Pretty sure Melbourne Uni does not allow Golden Key (if they do, it has zero presence at Unimelb anyway - I haven't been invited), as it is basically considered a scam.

They don't require HD average, just top 15% of uni students, so there are plenty of stories with students getting invitations with high Credit averages.

Who knows, it might even provide some useful networking opportunities.

Quote from 2 friends of mine in the Society:

"You pretty much pay lots of money in return for something sounding way more pompous and prestigious than it actually is on your resume".

The only real benefit is apparently the annual ball :P (which anyone can go to anyways, you just pay $10 extra, woopdeedoo)

Hmmm...  I dunno.  Maybe you got one of those letters saying that you've won 1 million dollars in Nigeria?

If you can get back your initial investment, then it's totally worth it. For instance, as a result of my GK participation, I'm going to the GK International Summit, which means free flights to the US, which means heavily reduced in price (as in, about $3000) one month long trip to the US. Not bad for $95.

I decided to join. :P
Not only because it sounded cool, and I'm a sucker for those things, but also because I'm thinking of going on student exchange next year to the US - I'm pretty sure Golden Key would look good to them.
And I think they also offer scholarship for overseas travel.

I think it really depends. I initially joined because I was/am interested in maybe going to the US for postgrad and I know GK is a big deal over there. Also my parents were willing to pay for membership because they were quite chuffed to hear that I was in the top 15%. Anyway, if you're going to use your membership (turn up for events and free food and stuff and apply for scholarships and jobs/internships) then it is worth it. If not, then it is essentially a waste of money. It'd be especially useful if you're looking to work in the US after graduation.
