If you want to graduate with first class honours, you have to work hard all the way!

Actually, I'm not sure. I've been meaning to ask people what are the requirements for first class honours. Could someone share this info?

Nah, for courses like science/engineering later year units are weighted more heavily. So you can stuff up your first year and just do really well later and you can still get honours.

Depends a lot on your natural aptitude for the subject. If the work seems to come relatively easy to you (i.e. you're not constantly chasing up tutors/people asking questions and feeling totally lost) then I think a D is pretty achievable, with a moderate amount of study.

I know this question is very subjective and is dependent on what subjects you do but:

Are uni exams typically harder or easier than VCE exams?  Are they designed to trip you over like some VCE exams?

Not in my experience... I think the majority of marks will go towards pretty straightforward questions (esp in law where we have enough people dropping out/failing out already without tricky crap on the exam). But some marks  are usually allocated for people who show like, extra research/understanding/etc.

BusEco faculty staff are pretty lazy... they usually just steal questions, change the names and halve all the figures.

awesome  :D

how strict is the marking tho? like in vce u can loose so many marks just cos u didnt use some key words despite knowing the subject back to front, i assume uni is a bit more fair, but is it?

You need to know the terminology, but I suppose the whole 'formulaic answer' is less common in uni... so long as you can prove your knowledge to your examiner, you'll get a decent mark.

But if you're actually 'wrong', the examiners will know, they're like hawks (at least that's what I've gathered from assignments)

Um, I want to go overseas next year.
So, yep.  Have to do gud.

And also, I think it kind of depends on the Uni you go to.  Like, for eg. Melbourne Uni, most people who go to that school would have gotten over 90, so they're used to studying really hard and putting in effort.  And I know for myself, that the idea of suddenly being mediocre since now everybody is as good as you are at what you're doing is kind of daunting.
So yeah, that's why I try hard despite it being first year.

Yeah... I got a bit frustrated by that too... going from a big fish in a little pond to a little fish in a big pond.
You can't be the best at everything at uni. Hell, you can't even be GOOD at everything - most uni students have at least one rouge N, P or C tainting their record.
The trick at uni is to find your niche - discover an area you're good at and enjoy, then pursue it.

I find that when I can't do well at something, I give up the subject and focus all my energy on subjects that I have a real shot at getting high marks for =\ Which of course leads to drastic differences between my top and worst subject.
