i agree with vexx...
really unlikely ...
and yeah .. biomed leads to med ..
but maybe vexx like science more than biomed ...
is not about going for the most prestigious course ....more about going for yout interest ..

Most of the majors are based on human related things... thats why its bio*med* instead of straight biology which would go more into photosynth i reckon

oh, okay then.  out of interest, just me trying to rort the system but yeah,  if i don't get into mbbs @ monash, can i do a really short undergraduate degree, sit the gamsat (and hopefully do better than the umat haha), and then do md @ melb?

and by short undergrad degree i mean like 2 years, if one even exists in some kind of field lol...

You'd need to satisfy the prerequisite subjects. Anatomy, physiology and i forget (biochemistry i think). Which would be hard in some courses, its even hard in some of the health sciences. A pharmacy student on here wanted to get into graduate med but couldn't because they couldn't possibly take the prerequisite subjects.

Also needs to be a 3 year degree:

Quote
Applicants will need an approved three or more year bachelor degree; prerequisite second year subjects (one each) of anatomy, physiology & biochemistry; the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) and a multi mini interview (MMI).

so you're outta luck mate

thanks kp.  i knew it would be too good to be true haha.  stupid melbourne with their shitty minimum of 7 years of uni.  why they got rid of undergrad med, pisses me off so much.  not only is there less undergrad spots know, but it's getting more and more competitive aswell.

knowing my luck, the % cut off for umat this year will probably go up heaps to like 95% or something...

Yeah, its alright mate, i was thinking of the biomedicine route as backup.

It aint the pretty option though... i am interested in biology yeah... but i dont know if i could stick it out for 3 years and there's not even a guarantee of getting into med.

If you bugger up your gamsat you can just take a year off and do it again but if you bugger your GPA theres no way you're getting into graduate med.

Those 3 years are wasted and you now have a degree you dont want...

Pretty risky gamble but if you think you can do it and really want to get into med, you'll get there eventually.

Another option is taking a year off and trying to absolutely ace the umat..

yeah, that's what i'm going to do if i don't get in.  would probably need to repeat english again too, because i can already see it is going to screw up my vce.

now sure what i'd do if i got an offer interstate though.  but yeah, 3 year biomed is a big gamble, and gamsat makes the umat look amateurish apparently.  monash is definitely the way to go.

With a biomedical science degree you could probably be a lab minion somewhere doing minor laboratory work.

Also due to the Melbourne model you could actually attempt to get into other graduate health science courses like dentistry or physio.

OR

You could take it futher get a masters or phd do your own research or teach in a university

OR

Work at maccas... knowing how protein denatures really helps you cook a great burger

Oh me... my back up is in my signature man...prostitution... you got any suggestions for sexy stripper names?

(Seriously though if i dont get into medicine off the bat and *i did* take the huge risk to go into biomed.... if i dont get into grad medicine after doing biomed...id try repeat the gamsat if my GPA Was good or id try get into dentistry or physio... if that fails i guess work in a lab or *sigh* become a highschool teacher or some crappy gig like that)

kingpomba- on second thoughts i'd probably prefer biomed because i find it more interesting, but last year i was considering just applying for science as i wanted to do psychology as well, because you can't really do that as your science subjects in biomed. so science is better if you want to choose all your subjects.

and stonecold- yes it's a three year degree and you'd have to do a science or biomed undergrad to be able to get the right prereqs for the MD, it will be extremely competitive as it melb has always been known for their prestigious as med degrees, it'll be a fucking killer to get into- there's always interstate though:)
