I'd say a strong grip on the theory, a very good conceptual understanding.

After this, practice, practice, practice.

Which probably means exams.

Depends on which subjects. I can't comment on accounting, but for any sciences, a good conceptual understanding beats extensive grinding of practice exams. Understanding the theory makes you much more adaptable than what you would be if you only practiced past papers.
