Advantages of doing course over holidays

This is directed towards those who have finished a course during the summer holidays
ie. TT and the.watchman

Why did you choose to do the whole course, and what benefits/ disadvantages did you fin in doing it? (Apart from enjoying the hols)

Was it to keep ahead of class work, did u find it was better relearning it?

And are there any subjects that you wouldn't do it for?
2010: Business Management [47]

I thought doing Methods in its entirety during the hols really helped me to understand the concepts very clearly before term started, so that when I was in class, I would not have to focus on learning the basics, but rather gaining valuable knowledge of the nuances of each topic.

Also, I was able to try past papers (I did about five VCAA and a couple of company ones - I only marked the VCAA ones), which was really important for me to test my knowledge.

I reckon sciences and maths are good to do in the hols (I did most of Unit 1 physics and quite a bit of chem - lots of stoich).
For languages, it's probably better to just go through the grammar and vocab and learn them solidly.
Obviously, I did not do any prep for Cisco :P as that would have been completely pointless

I hope this helps! :)
Remember, remember the 5th of November

2010 - MM CAS (47) - Cisco 1+2 (pass :P)
2011 - Eng - Phys - Chem - Spesh - Latin - UMAT
ATAR - 99.00+ plz... :)

Feel free to PM me for anything :D

so did you bring in your completed book of methods into class or did you start fresh, and then just speed past everyone else?

Coming from a school where there would be about 1% of kids would read an english book in the holidays, doing this would be awe inspiring to others haha

anything to get ahead of the competition :)

Lol, I brought a new book, as I wanted to do the practice questions fresh, without looking back at anything.
Then I get a good picture of what I know clearly, and what I need to focus on.

Yeah, I definitely wanted to avoid that! :)
Also, it's great to be able to sit in a class and listen to the teacher from an entirely different perspective, considering that you already know what he/she is saying.

Sort of, I didn't exactly do many practice questions from my textbook over the summer, just the last couple from every exercise. So most of the questions in class are new :P

I did a pretty large chunk of biology (because i like it the most) over the summer holidays.

I found my teacher and my book (what i used to teach myself) focused on very different things. For instance, i focused hard on learning formulas for carbohydrates or proteins or whatever...where as my teacher completely glossed over it... whilst some sections in the book i paid little attention to we're the heavy focus of a couple class weeks. So, theres always a danger of that.

I dont think it helped hugely to be honest so i wouldn't recommend it. I did however have the chance to hear it explained a completely different way and this helped a little.
