Shown in the image, there is this strange voltmeter saying X or Y and in circuit a) what is that connection between the resistors? Is that a battery?

What I did was since the voltage across 5k resistor is 5-0=5 I did R=V/I=5/5x10^3=1mA and since the voltage is positive it is in direction P

In 2k resistor I did -3/2x10^3=-1.5mA and since the voltage is negative it is in direction of Q

In circuit b) the voltage across both is just (5--3)=8 so 8/7x10^3=1.14mA and since in series they are both same and since positive voltage
