Textbook Errors

Having just discovered an error in one of my textbooks, I was thinking that maybe we should start an ongoing thread that points out any obvious errors in any biology textbook so that no-one gets confused or is basing concepts on wrong information. We can all check to make sure that we agree that there is in fact an error.

Textbook: Heinemann Biology 2, p. 159
Error: Bacteria that organise in chains are termed 'staphylo' while bacteria in clusters are termed 'strepto'.
Correction: Clustered bacteria = staphylo, chained bacteria = strepto.

This is probably the biggest and somewhat infamous (to teachers) mistake in the book. LIPIDS ARE NOT POLYMERS!!! Cause a lot of controversy in 2006 when the new study design was first implemented.

Textbook: Nature of Biology Book 2, p. 8
Error: The monomers of lipids is not fatty acids, fats, lipids and membranes ARE NOT true polymers.
Correction: The controversy lies within the placement of steroids which are also lipids but cannot be split into monomers. In reference to all other polymers, polysaccharides, Nucleic acids and proteins, they can be split into their building blocks of monomers, monosaccharides, amino acids, nucleotides respectively.

This is an error present in Nature of Biology Book 2. All though I don't have the book anymore, in the part where it talks about protein synthesis, it states something called "post translation modification". This should be "post TRANSCRIPTION modification" (the removal of introns from the pre-mRNA strand). Just a small thing that could lead to a lot of confusion. Perhaps someone could back me up with a page number... :P

Nice pick up - Hadn't even noticed that one.  It's on NOB Page 390.

Textbook: Heinemann Biology 2, p. 473
Error: It is said that purine bases pair (A.T) with each other and that pyrimidine bases (C,G) pair with each other.
Correction: C,T are pyrimidines, A,G are purines hence a purine always pairs with a pyrimidine.

Here's my pick up, it's simliar to yours, on page 390
Under the heading Pre-mRNA is modified after transciption
"The primary product of translation of pre-mRNA, also known as the primary transcript."
It's supposed to be product of transcription right?
The last sentenceof that paragraph goes something like this
"The pre-mRNA is altered after it has been transcribe, a process known as post-transciption modification."
Which is correct(?)

Textbook: Heinemann Biology 2,
Error: Genome and genotype in glossary
Correction: The definitions are swapped, the genome one should be the genotype's definition and vice verse.

Correction: DNA synthesis is 5 prime to 3 prime.
