Question:
Is this THE network – social and/or professional – for potential tutors and students to meet and discuss private tutoring arrangements, ie. kinda like a dating site but for education services instead? I have a few leads and avenues at the moment, albeit lucrative, however I'm none too enthusiastic about them because it goes through distance brokerage via agencies which tend to rip off both the service provider (tutor) as well as the consumer (student).
Background:
I'm currently a casual tutor at unimelb – undergrad commerce – and also take students on a private basis for individual sessions in various accounting, corporate finance, derivative investments and economics subjects. Most of these students are overseas based and as such turnover is high due to cyclical nature of course enrolments. I'm trying to find local students, particularly at the VCE level, because, from past experience, they tend to be more stable clients curriculum wise. There's also less of a language component with local students as certain constituents within my international clientele insist that I speak their native tongue (Chinese Mandarin) with them during study sessions with a few even insisting that I provide foreign language study notes and text translations.
Make no mistake, the money is good. Foreign students pay top dollar for private tuition, especially around exam time and assignment submission deadlines. Periodically, I would receive requests to undertake private emergency consultation for anywhere between $150-200 an hour with desperados. These I generally decline because (1) it predominantly entails a student wanting the "gist" of an entire semester's course in one hit a couple days prior to their exams having done nil prep work leading up or (2) they want to pay me to do their assignment for them. I find that there is a pervasive lack of continuity and dedication in this process as most of these students aren't in it for the benefit of skill or knowledge; they want to pass and get their PR – period.
