"Greetings to all those of you enrolled in MTH2010 Multivariable Calculus, for semester II 2010.
A special support class will be running this semester. The idea of this class is to cover the standard material introduced in lectures and then to expand upon it by introducing more general techniques, extensions of the theory and more difficult problems.
There are many, many possible things that we could cover so it becomes a matter of how much time we have, but I always like to include about one hours' worth of more challenging stuff per support class to give you some idea of what the maths is really about. As well as that there is the added bonus in that quite often we go through more general cases of problems seen in the standard tutorial sheets. It is often easier and more beneficial to know the background to solving the general problem rather than trying to remember many special cases that may appear.
There is no extra credit attached to this class, but some things have a benefit not easily appreciated until higher levels of mathematics is attempted. Be aware that the standard material is covered, but it is often done very quickly. So if you think that a more sedate pace of learning is required then you may need to make a choice about the right type of support class for you.
The time allocated to this class is Fridays at 3-5, S13 and the invitation is open to all who wish to attend, but the honest recommendation is that you should have a result of 80% or more for MTH1030 (or equivalent) to be confident of keeping up with the material presented."
