5.2 Life expectation and mortality

Under the life expectation estimation formula adopted by the ABS in 2003,[34] Indigenous males' life expectation was estimated to be 59.4 years over 1996-2001, while female life expectation was estimated to be 64.8 years: a life expectation inequality gap when compared to the general Australian population of approximately 17 years for the same five year period. The ABS has not released a life expectation estimate for Indigenous peoples for the years 2002 on.[35]

Indigenous peoples’ life expectation appears to be similar to that of people in developing countries. Although international comparisons should be made with some caution because of the different formulae with which life expectation is calculated between jurisdictions, with reference to the 2005 United Nation's Human Development Index Indigenous peoples appear to have a life expectation approximating that of the people of Turkmenistan (62.4 years).

In the 2006 Census, the mean equivalised gross household income for Indigenous persons was $460 per week, which amounted to 62% of the rate for non-Indigenous Australians ($740 per week).

How is this a result of racism? Indigenous Australians have the same opportunities as everyone else to succeed within the Capitalist framework.

Go to the cricket between and Subcontinental team and Australia, and you will see :P
Sport fanaticism and racism are entirely separate phenomena. . .

No I think that's a common excuse for racism.

As being of Indian heritage I went to the Pakistan v Australia match on Boxing day 09. Copped alot of racist crap, like "awww mate sad you're losing dont blow us up", "sit down you f****n curry" after death staring some fat bogan who threw a beer at me and a few others that were with.

i agree partly, many bogans are racist (have had similar cricket experiences as I am also Indian), but I believe that most non-Bogan Aussies are fine

Imagine if Coles started advertising for jobs that you could only apply for if you were white

The bogan minority do not represent the entire population. Yes, there are racist Australians but there are racist people of all nationalities. Am I to expect that the Indians who called Andrew Symonds a monkey are tolerant people? No. But I do not condemn the entire Indian population as racist.

How?
Ancient Persian Proverb; " I Wept because i had no Shoes, until i saw a man with no feet!"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

The older generations are usually more xenophobic. We've grown up within the paradigm of a culture of political correctness and conformity that shuns anything that isn't accepted by the mainstream - or liberal values/ That's why you'll see less 'racists' in the 15-25 demographic.

How?

I'm not sure if this applies to ninwa's parents, but often parents born in Asian countries who migrate here will stereotype against other races. They may call 'white kids' dumb, or whatever.

While it is wrong, I don't really care about it - they can keep their thoughts among themselves and hurt nobody. It's when racist thoughts become violence/discrimination that there's a problem.

I guess I, myself, am a bit 'racist' too I guess. Theres a certain race of which (I am NOT exaggerating) EVERY person I have met has been quite arrogant/violent and dishonest (stealing, etc.). This is probably just because of the school I go to, rather than something to do with the race. While I have become somewhat apprehensive towards these people, I wouldn't abuse them out loud or do anything to them just because of the country their parents were born in.

Making assumptions and generalisations is just something some of us do I guess (and is usually harmless if that's where it stops), but when it goes gets to gang attacks on trains/in the CBD, or discriminating for jobs etc. it becomes unacceptable. But that's just my view on it.

I try not to form stereotypes about the someone's race, but sometimes I can't help but stereotype religions. I'm still undecided as to whether that's justifiable...

Do you think this culture of political correctness is necessarily a bad thing? Some people seem to think that political correctness is suppressing our true nature, but perhaps it is fundamentally changing our nature (see Sapir-Whorf) so that through non-discriminatory language we are conditioned into becoming more accepting of each other.
