Study Score?
« on: August 31, 2010, 04:36:18 pm »
Hi, everyone. I got 145/150 for my mid-year Chem exam. According to the VCAA's statistics, the mean was 92.3 and sd was 32.5, and 134 was required to get an A+. Do you think I can get over 48 for my Study Score with this kind of result?

I hope so.  I got the same mark as you, and was also hoping for 48+.  Personally I think we'll need close to full marks on the end of year, maybe 1 mark lost absolute max, then maybe we'll have a chance at 48. :)

A question on bio.. with only a 63/75, (hopefully) a much higher exam 2 score and being first in SACs, can I realistically aim for above 45?

Yeah, only a couple of marks lost on exam 2 should do it.

I had a friend who scored that mark on exam 1 last year and got a 50. So yes, it's not out of the question at all. People take individual assessment marks too seriously - it's the whole picture that counts.

Wow!   Why can you score so low in Bio and do well?   Whilst it's not easy, it's not that hard either...

That was the exact same mark I had for my midyear. I then 'massively' screwed up the end-year with probably 8+ marks (16 after doubling) gone there, and ended up with the score you want.

remember 08 mid year's cut off was slightly lower.. and we dont know anything about mid years.

do they write the unit 4 exam during this period so they can adjust it so that it is harder to spread people out?

I do fervently pray that the second exam will be extremely difficult. No, seriously, if the exam is difficult and everybody screws up then the ones who can do it (hopefully, I'll be among them) will benefit, since stupid mistakes will not be as bad. For some reason beyond my control, I screwed up one multiple choice (I retried it and had no problem with it), and I lost a further 2 marks in the question related to the bunsen burner thing and 1 mark in the last explanation question. Does anyone know what the answer was for the bunsen burner question (why distillation flask should not be heated using a bunsen burner)? I checked my book and there is nothing related to that question (Heinemann), and even my teacher did not know the answer (not that he is any good, but still). Hell, was it even on the study design? Seriously, man, I hate explanation questions, I never know how much to put in.

I wrote that the heat would not be able to be easily controlled and would fluctuate unlike a heating bath (cant remember what its called) and I got full marks for that one
