I just got accepted into MacRob and I have been thinking about gaining a really good ATAR score since I want to do medicine. So, do I have a better chance of having a good ATAR score at macrob or at my school (which isn't a good school at all)? I heard that SACs are being pushed up at macrob because they give out hard ones. So is this an advantage for me?

At my own school, I can be easily ranked higher (I don't mean to brag or whatsoever... :P) because the material is easy and the motivation of my class is not high meaning that people are more likely not to study. Some of them tend to muck around a lot which this does not abode well for me  who sometimes have exams upcoming in the few weeks.

So, what do you think?

MacRob.

It's impossible to argue otherwise.

ROFL

I am just worried that if even though I outrank my classes at my school, do my cohort bring my scores down?

for the ladies?

-unlikely

Your SAC marks will scale highly in subjects with very large cohorts (80+), but you should be a bit cautious in the smaller subjects where if some of the top rank students screw up their exams then the rest of the class suffers.

If you outrank everyone in your class their scores can not bring you down. The downside of smaller subjects at selective schools like MHS and MacRob is that when there are only 15 kids in a class, there are still going to be very smart people that beat you on SACs through the year, and if you have a look at what happened in some of the humanities subjects last year where the #1 ranks got SS of 39-42, the rest of the class got dragged down getting lower SAC scores than their exam mark (pretty rare at selective schools).

So yes, if you do big subjects like Chem Physics Accounting Maths English or Psych etc, MacRob is the far better choice.

Additional benefit is that you get to hang out with Melbourne High guys who are all very cool.

Stop worrying about the mechanics of scaling, that's overthinking it. Decide based on whether or not the school has better facilities or options than your current school. You don't need to go to MacRob/MHS to get a good score, it just helps (I decided against, didn't matter). Since you don't have such a high opinion of your school, then I'd accept unless there's some other reason you don't like it.

Agreed, the advantages of MacRob are not related to scaling mechanics. It helps in other ways. It is highly likely that going to MacRob will increase the chances of you getting a higher ATAR, and increase your chances of getting into Med, compared to your current school.

Kid welcome to selective entry school lyf :P
Be prepared to be surrounded nerds every-day;
Be prepared to work yur ass off to reap any satisfaction from work;
All that selective schools do is give you harder SACS to separate you and thus when yu smash yur exam yur 'low' SAC score of a A will get pushed up to an A+ as VCAA can see that the school's SACS were hard [ after yu ace the VCAA exam of course ].

LOL thank you, taigastyle!

So, what if there is a really competitive atmosphere and you would eventually end up lower in ranking, would this have an effect on your ATAR enter score?

omg, it all balances out in the end. I got like, internal Bs and Cs (and an E) for Methods at MHS and it scaled to an A no problems. For English I didn't get an A+ all year, got lots of Bs and that scaled to an A+ SAC score no problems.

^ this

Maintain an average mark of Bs and Cs in SACs and You'll get an A+ in the bigg subjects, but in the smaller subjects I would  be a bit more cautious.

Though you best should try to avoid getting E's :P

Lower Sac Ranking should generally be fine, don't worry about it! :)
