A motor relies on the principle that a current running through a conductor will experience a magnetic force, which will consequently cause it to rotate.
A generator on the other hand is a coil rotated throughout a magnetic field. This relies on the induction of a current in the conductor due to the changing flux.
AC generator  refers to the output, which is obtained when SLIP rings are used, these just allow the current to flow normally and consequently it is a current which changes direction.
DC is obtained from a generator when SLIT rings are used because the current flow will only be in one direction.
when slit rings are used in a motor, this reverses the current going into the coil / amature and consequently allows a rotation in a constant direction.

...ALSO alternators are magnets that rotate around a loop.
