Don't just start writing imaginative now, 3 weeks before the exam... stick to expository and if you can't finish in 1 hour, try 90 minutes. Your word count will increase rapidly as you practice. 700 words of gold is still better than 1500 words of garbage.
I would only recommend imaginative for those who have written in that style for a few years, otherwise it's too risky since it could either go super low or super high.

Is it really that much better to do expository? My school hasn't even taught it to us at all, so I'm going to have to go with imaginative.

Expository is just safer, if you've been doing imaginative just stick with it; the exam is only 3 weeks away.

i went to an english lecture on the holidays
the senior examiner stated that she has never marked highly an imaginative piece (which was shattering for me)
she said it was better to write a persuasive speech or something similar with imaginative traits.

good luck

Well my teachers have never bothered to teach us how to write an expository so even If I wanted to write one I wouldn't be able to. Would be surprised if they even knew how to write one themselves..

I am finding it difficult to write an expository piece within 1 hour. I have trouble in constructing an introduction and formulating enough ideas. As a result, I can barely get half done (only ~400 words:() . I find that it takes me a few hours to write a complete piece. I have mostly written expository all year with my tutors advice. I cant remember why but he said it was safer to write an expository piece.
However when I write in a different style such as imaginative I can complete it within the time-frame and the marks I receive from my teacher are the same if not better. I feel that I won't be able to write a complete expository piece in the exam due to the time limit.
I'm not too sure what to practice writing at this stage. Whether to stick with expository or to write an imaginative piece instead?
What do you guys think? Is it really safer to do the expository piece? Or should i just go with what i can do within the time (ie Imaginative?)?
Advice?
Cheers

i used to be like you, so what i did, i forced my self to sit down and actually write, even if it didn't produce quality. ( My first Language Analysis took me 1 hour 40 min ) i honestly felt like giving up but I just moved on. Now i'm getting the hang of it and proud of what i can write in an hour :) ( I never had a problem with content, but with time, and mind you i only just started this month )

The first time is always the hardest. But as you move on it becomes a lot better and you actually begin to feel relieved =]

I'd just stick with expository, it is a lot more safer and easier than imaginative. And like what someone also said, imaginative doesn't always get the marks..i heard this from more than 2 teachers ( who are examiners )

Umm, i'm not sure if you've heard this before, but you can write a 'hybrid' piece. Unlike the sac where you had a statement of intentions and designated a particular style, the exam is just marked for what it is. Personally, i like to write persuasive/expository because it's what i'm comfortable with. You could try to write expository/imaginative? I'm not sure if there is synergy between the two though
