"Belonging involves conforming and a loss of identity."
introduction- discuss the innate longing of humanity to belonging to a group, benefits of an asserted identity and your contention of '"although belonging to a group does pose threats to the individual's sense of self, the benefits yielded from its membership cannot be ignored. It allows for the identity to strengthen by confronting it with potentially conflicting ideologies, allowing the individual to overcome these issues and exit as an improved member of society.'"
1st argument- explain the prompt directly. what kind of comformity is required, why it exists, how conformity influences the identity and then if the paragraph remains short incorporate an external reference such as "such examples of tragic influence and corruption of the identity is present in society, especially in the very impressionable youth. Every day, young girls are exposed relentlessly to the propagandic (is that a word?) advertising in the media, by which they are pressured to conform to images being projected to them. Despite being expensive and often inappropriate, these teenagers adhere to the image being presented to them, with the few incapable of doing so often rejected from the majority group. In order to belong, the girl's are required to relinquish their core values and identities, or face society in solitude further damaging the sense of self, already in a fragile state.
2nd argument- This topic works great for Holden Caufield, but i dont know your other text so whatever works best for you. with Holden just discuss his fragile state of mind at being isolated from society and having no evident relationship, aside from the faint one he has with sister Pheobe. You can reject the prompt in this argument by contending how when in her presence, Holden's psyche becomes more established, exemplifying the importance of belonging when in contrast to identity.
3rd argument-continueing from Catcher you can discuss how in order to assert himself, Holden leads a life in solitude displaying his individuality through the red hunting hat. link back to the prompt by conveying how holden believes that in order for him to accept the "phony", adult society, he is required to sacrifice his identity, thus leading to his isolation as he attempts to refrain from such an act. reject the prompt again by explaining how holden's ideology is paradoxial in that he his unstable psychosis is the direct result from not belonging, but in order to stabilise his sense of self he rejects society and all human bonds.
umm i think that's all i got for now.... if i think of more all post later. sorry for the late reply :S
