It would be easier to D/L a skin and then customise it, and build everything else around that.

I could customise it :)

1.5k for a redesign of this magnitude is rather.. limited. I have some mates who charge 2k for a simple html/css redesign. The scope of this job is rather large, and most likely would involve a fair bit of coding too. For a notes system overhaul that actually works (well), professional talent will be hard to come by.

I suggest VN to open some kind of donation channel, for current members to show their appreciation, for alumni to pay their dues, and for the facilitators (enwiabe) to be acknowledged.

Then the redesign really will be a community decision. Have members assemble a team of "volunteers", have the team decide on the roles and allocation of rewards. Then put in your 1.5k and anyone else who care to put in some money for future kids. That way it's more of a community thing rather than a commercial/professional feel.

I'm keen for donations, I owe a lot of my success through this facility. I think I also speak for a few others who will gladly put in some beer money as gratitude for the community this site facilitated (and still facilitating). This is all counting on maturity and generosity, and I do like to assume the best of everyone :)

I am hesitant to allow donations as I do intend, as part of the redesign to make a commercially viable (for myself) VN... I'm looking to set up proper advertising partnerships to turn VN into a profitable business (whilst, of course, keeping everything free and not annoying the crap out of users)

My friend charges $40/hour. But she's no web designer :P

Back on topic, I've seen custom skins done for under $300; it really depends on the complexity of the skin itself. Perhaps members could just work on one-page HTML designs for some ideas, then you can take it to a skinner and they'll integrate it into SMF.

Anyway I've found some skinning guides for SMF, I've done IPB before, but I'll set up a test board after exams and get working on a few skins :)

Oh, and why not upgrade to SMF 2.0 while we're changing VN? :)
