^oh i see haha.
well taboo shouldn't be used when inappropriate, that being it mustn't be used unless you are in a specific context against a familiar audience, say friends discussing sex or whatever, but not to grannyyy.
so if taboo topics are brought up, you should be using politically correct language to make the conversation smoother, so use euphemisms.. this applies to discrimination too about how it is inappropriate, etc..
hmm yeah i guess its a topic on PC language then ha.

So for this kind of essay, would you talk about (paragraphs)
1 the principles of appropriateness? PC language?
2 taboos? social acceptance?
3 context? when to and when not to use

I suppose that would work also!

What I did, (I have this corrected, and got an A+), was 4 paragraphs: 1 on sexist, 1 on racist, 1 on taboos of body image (which are new), and 1 on taboos that still exist in contemporary Australia.

Approx 680 words.

I would probably go with 1 - PC, euphemisms to avoid taboos 2 - dysphemisms and politically INcorrect language when a user doesnt want to avoid taboo topics. Both sides of the story basically. Then 3 - maybe something on politeness and social distance, more acceptable when there is closer social proximity.
Relating all these to the POA as I went along.

Yeah, both sides always shows depth in understanding IMO...

Also important to remember that taboos are culturally defined.  What is taboo in one culture may be considered perfectly acceptable in another.

And with PC, I don't even argue for it the whole time.  It is plain dumb to say that PC has reduced discrimination.  There are so many examples of people using discriminatory language or maintaining discriminatory attitudes.  The idea that eradicating discriminatory language would also suppress discriminatory attitudes shows a lack of understanding towards how language really works...

I massively hate PC, think it is the biggest wank.  I hope it comes up tomorrow so I can tear it to shreds...

It has done jack for society, but seeing as VCE is all about conformity, I have to do it in a way which is descriptive which effectively prevents me from arguing totally against it, cause then the examiner will tear me to shreds...

hey hey, it has helped woman have more power with womyn ;) that was DEFINITELY a requirement, also, we should thankful that political correctness has allowed us to feel more included in language if we are black and there are 'blackboards' existing - thank god for the name to chalkboards... despite whiteboards still not being offensive.. definitely required...
ha, PC is so silly at times.. so so silly

yeah you could do attitudes towards PC and rip into it.

I hope this topic comes up too.

Ill be talking about how it victimises those who do not want to be percieved as victims and also places unnecessary emphasis on difference. You could also argue that instead of empowering minorities it does the opposite.

i still use false generics. fireperson just sounds wrong.

aahhh i shouldn't have said 'grand' thats politically incorrect as its discrimination against differently-sized people...theres no escaping it :(

I seriously hope it comes up, and all those who say nothing more than PC is wonderful and great should automatically fail.

And yeah, PC promotes imposed labeling which is more offensive to many groups.

'African American' is the dumbest term.  Not all black people are from Africa.  Some study has found that the vast majority would actually rather just be called 'black'

Possible pro's are anti discrimination towards the disabled, as only sicko's bag these people,  but don't tell me it has curbed racism.
PC attempts to repress subconscious prejudices, like these minor ones, but Racism is deeply ingrained within the attitudes of many and some Anti-Racism Act is not going to stop them expressing these views.
