Commonly used task words and their definitions

Here are some task words used in the exam that my teacher provided me.

Analyse:Identify the main features then examine closely; examine in parts; show how the parts relate to the whole

Apply: Use the information provided or knowledge in a particular situation and make links and connections

Assess: Decide the value of, judge, measure the importance of

Comment on: Make relevant remarks about (that show an understanding of)

Compare and contrast: Give the similarities (compare) and differences (contrast) of

Examine: Give a detailed description and scrutinise carefully

Critically evaluate/Critically examine/Evaluate: Weigh up arguments for and against something; give strengths and weaknesses of, and give your opinion

Define: Explain the exact meaning of

Describe: Give the facts about something and if the question refers to a process, give a detailed account in sequential order

Discuss: Give a reasoned argument for and against a particular issue and you can also give your opinion

Distinguish: Explain the differences and distinctive characteristics

Establish: Prove the point beyond dispute

Explain: Provide details to give the reader an understanding of

Identify: State the key features

Illustrate: Use examples to demonstrate and explain

Indicate: Point out

Interpret: Make clear the meaning of something; consider implications

Justify: Demonstrate by giving evidence

List: Make points briefly and put them in order

Outline: Briefly indicate the key features

Suggest: Present ideas and recommendations explaining why the ideas are suitable

To what extent: The degree to which something (such as an institution, procedure or law) fulfills a purpose or principle
