I was trying to do this question for 25 minutes...

I thought the cylinder was a third of the cone's volume T_T

Somebody said this too over at ituteforums and I got really excited that I'd gotten
it right but nopeeee. My class never got taught similar triangles (at least not when I was listenning)

I basically only knew about similar triangles because I did Further as a 3/4 subject last year. Very glad I did Further now.

i did the same as you!
haha... i figured out the volume of the cone and then divided it by three to get the 'volume' of the cylinder
and then rearranged to make h the subject.

FAIL.

I didn't do trig last year...  :(

loll OMG shakehands!! i thought the cone and the cynlinder had the SAME volume because i got maximum R=0 at first and den i knew des was wrong so i changed it to another method= = ~

I can't wait to read the examiners report.  There would have been so many fun and creative ways people would have gone about this Q. :)

it's gonna be one sad report me thinks. -_-
his pet peeve is miscalculations
with so many big numbers.. and multiplying and dividing numbers left right and centre.. no doubt theres gonna be careless errors

"It was very disappointing to see so many students failing to answer this question. As methods students, prior knowledge of ALL maths taught at VCE are expected and it is extremely disappointing that students only learnt out of a Methods CAS book and where unable to answer a type of question most would have never seen before in their lives. As students are studying mathematical methods, all mathematical methods should be known."
Hmm...next year already. Well better set my goals and all...(raw)

I thought most people learnt about similar triangles in year 8-9, if not before.

Ahh I've seen a few similar triangles lately and it's even in one of the worked examples in MathsQuest with related rates (which I thought would be on exam 1).

But then I freaked out about the cylinder in the cone and totally left it out. I WAS EVEN THINKING ABOUT IT DAMMIT. Also ran out of time BUT STILL.

Either forgetting or untaught. Don't remember having any geometry besides h/a/p formulas.

Yes I did exactly that! Man I felt like such a genius at the time when I figured the 'relationship' between the cone
and the cylinder. EPICCC FAILL.

" some students assumed that a cone is a square"

LMAO! Gosh so much procrastination right now. We should be studying for exam 2 T_T

Had not idea that similarities was part of the methods course... I used similarities and got the right answer 1st, before thinking too much, and changing it -.-

And if it was taught in yr 8/9 it shouldn't be in VCE methods, all of methods course should be from Unit1/2/3/4. FML though
