If I lost the entire 5 marks (out of 40) in the cone question in the Methods CAS exam. What is the maximum study score I could get? (My SAC mark average is about 98% and lets assume I ace the second exam). Also, lets assume my cohort is quite strong. Is a 45+ still possible? What about a 50?

I don't know about a 50, but 45-47 is possible.

Yeah, even if it was easy and you still managed to ace it, ( just as you would in a hard exam ) then you should be fine.

Oh wow. By the way, are they going to be giving consequential marks for the cone question? Do you reckon they might give people 1 mark for giving the answer: h = 5r/2 ?

Don't know, I think it would depend on how VCAA is going to choose to mark. ( considering most of the state would have done that, and it is a two mark q's)

so if they do, most likely one mark for that and another mark for the last q's ( setting it to ds/dr=0) so a maximum of 2/5 marks would be given, so that's 37/40  if you had got the rest of the paper correct.

Awww... Haha ok.

If only I was born a year earlier. I easily aced last years VCAA exam 1.

By the way, I didn't even set ds/dr = 0 because I knew it would lead to r=0. Instead I drew a graph and showed that r=2 would be a maximum. Haha. Epic fail xD.

That means my max mark on that exam is 36/40. VCAA really should have made it a "Show that" question. At least, people wouldn't lose 5 marks just for getting one sub-question wrong. Oh wells, life goes on.

yeah, 2010 seems to be a year of roller-coaster exams. ( i guess, that's how i see it, having done previous exams)
I reckon if it was a "show that " q's, then it would have given it away and a lot of people would have realised how to do it. i guess that's why they didn't add it in.
