Is this the right place to ask?

anyway, what is the aggregate? what does it mean/do etc?

also, I heard something about LOTE languages adding to your aggregate? huh??
Graduated in 2011.

Bachelor of Science at Melbourne. Biological Science subjects.

It just the numerical score that you receive by adding your top 3 subjects (+ english requirement) and then adding 10% from your bottom two.
VTAC then hands you an ATAR score depending on how high your aggregate is compared to the rest of the state.

e.g. An aggregate of 200 will get you ~99.6 or something in that area. . .
211 gets you ~99.95
2009: Math Methods CAS [48]
2010: English [47]|Specialist Maths[44]|Physics[42]|Hebrew[37]|Accounting[48]  atar: 99.80

~209 = 99.95 the last few years.

If you are interested, ReganM, here is the aggregate table from last year, showing the ATAR(ENTER) corresponding to certain aggregates.
2009/2010: Mathematical Methods(non-CAS) ; Business Management | English ; Literature - Physics ; Chemistry - Specialist Mathematics ; MUEP Maths

96.85

2011-2015: Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and Bachelor of Science, Monash University

2015-____: To infinity and beyond.

But I sense some heavy competition this year :)

You think it'll be that high even though Spesh scaling has PLUMMETED. Last time it was >210 was in 07 where Spesh still went 50->55 :buck2:

I think Spesh will scale higher this year [maybe low 53s] - as will Methods (due to harder exams this year).
Also heaps of people are taking languages that scale to 55 - it's a trend that is catching on amongst top students.
I just don't think that Spesh scaling is the benchmark against which the 99.95 aggregate fluctuates around. . .

harder exams doesnt mean more scaling... scaling is based on many factors but not how hard the subject is. Biology exams are difficult (the average mark for short answer is 50%) but it only scales up 1.

I thought it worked like this:
Harder exams = Lower state mean mark = Lower marks on average = higher scaling to standardize study scores across subjects, and account for the discrepancy in difficulty. . .

i thouhgt scaling operated upon the strength of the cohort doing the exam.

It seems as if we can never really know how scaling works. Just hope for the best.

I think scaling is based on how people doing a given subject (say Spesh) perform in their other subjects. Generally Spesh kids are very smart, so that's why it gets scaled up highly.

Although it has gone down in recent years, I'm predicting for it to rise back up again in the next couple of years, since many Unis have dropped Spesh as a prerequisite for their engineering courses and stuff, meaning that less people will do Spesh JUST because it's a prereq, even if they aren't quite up to it.

Hence less "weaker" students doing it will likely bring the average up.

At least, I'm hoping.
