just had a chat to my friend
his subjects are going to be history of australia (his only unit 3), english, literature, maths methods, psychology and accounting
I can't really think of a unit 3 so Im just gonna copy him :) history sounds fun

So far my subjects chosen are
History of Australia (unit 3), Maths Methods, English, Chemistry and Further Mathematics (i think its easy and fun, having read the further mathematics board on this website)

1 more place for a unit 1

That's cool, my sister did really well [over 99], is doing Science@ uni and she only did Methods and Chemistry as maths/sci subjects.

So remember to choose 4 subjects you'll have a decent chance in. As for your 3/4 next year, take a squizz at your school's subject list, pick the your career teacher's brains and choose [in time] which one most interests you -that's the best way to go if you don't have any constraints about what you have to choose.

Take bio, and see it through to 3/4. It is highly reccommended by monash university. If you don;t particularly like science, and prefer easier workloads, i strongly urge to consider your reasoning for wanting to do medicine

i have considered it for years now (obsessively)
I know every australian university that offers it, the enter scores required, the umat raw scores required... etc

I do like maths and sciences, but I'd rather do other subjects I can go better in

work hard in vce > failing first year in uni.

take biology. you dont want to be in the "at risk" catching-up category when you get to uni *ANYWHERE*

and, are you doing history as a 3/4 sequence or only unit 3?
the latter is absolutely absurd.

and, if you want to get the scores for medicine, you want to be perfect in further. a few small mistakes can rid you of your 40+ that you'll want [after scaling, that is]

I was in no way suggesting that you are not suited to med, but be careful with perceptions that these subjects are easy to obtain high scores in. In medicine at monash mao, working hard in VCE biology will allow a very, very smooth transition to the bulk of the medical course, i sat in lectures for 7 weeks and didn't learn anything new. Further maths is a mistake, your performance must be flawless or anything above 45, this puts unrealistic pressure on yor performance

Sorry mate, you may not like this advice, but i speak from not only my own experience, but the collective experiences of quite a few of my cohort

I'd seriously re-think about your reason for choosing your unit 3/4 subject. Don't just do history because your friend is doing it! You want to nail your year 12 subject and the only way to do that is to do a subject YOU would actually enjoy. If you have no idea what you want to do, why not choose further maths (like you said, it sounds easy and fun) OR contact your schools 'careers or 'individual pathway' co-ordinator to give you an overview and idea about your options.

i meant, its better to work hard in vce than to fail first year :P

as in:

but, totally agree with your contention here.

now as for the actual topic:
ingramjack48: you should take a look at the ENTER calculator, and see what subjects and what scores you will need.
medicine needs planning from the beginning, a "meh" attitude will not achieve this.

Bio is a very fascinating subject and goes well with chem since both involve a bit of the other BUT it involves a lot of memorising and is barely scaled.

ps want to join the VN clinic?
2008 ENTER: 98.10

at UoM the melbourne model is 95 for biomedicine.
but its destined to rise. =)

the score is up there with Law. you dont want just anyone to be a doctor handling your life, do you? :P

Considering you are wishing to do medicine, I'd suggest the following subjects:

-Biology
-Chemistry
-English
(Chem and English are requirements, however I'd strongly reccomended doing Biology.)

and perhaps:
-Psychology? It's a great subject for people interested in the medical fields. It would be a good 3/4 subject to take next year also, as I don't think it really requires 1/2 knowledge.

What subjects and electives are you enjoying this year? It will help you choose the others.

Actually, no it's not. Medicine doesn't solely take the ENTER into account, it also considers interview and UMAT. Individuals with an ENTER of 94 plus great UMAT and interview results have the potential to get in. (Realistically, you need an ENTER score over 93- 95 to be considered.)

Also, Maths Methods (and maths altogether) isn't a requirement for undergraduate medicine at Monash University. (The ONLY u.grad med course lol)

Prerequisites for Monash University: Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (any) and in chemistry.

Yep, i got in with a 94, but i'm rural. As a metropolitan student, you're likely to need a score about 3 points higher with fantastic interview as well.

Different VCE subjects will help out with the med course, but biology is a subject that you should take really, otherwise you'll have to complete a 4 week bio bridging course between offers and the start of semester.

VCE PE has also been a help with medicine this year believe it or not

So you want to to med eh?

Then it looks like:

English,
Methods,
Specialist,
Physics,
Chemistry,
Biology

As for which year 12 subject you should take in year 11, it would be either methods or bio
