wikileaks is a fantastic idea though. maybe you could focus on australian issues like censorship of wikileaks and how that leads to all different problems including our freedom to read whatever we want, freedom to surf the net etc. Alhough i'm not really sure of the current status of that issue, perhaps you could head into that direction where it's a australian isolated issue.

Or do you think I could focus on the Australian cables ie KRudd getting called names, and the minister that has been accused of being a US spy?
Thinking sbout it though, that sounds a bit too vague/lack of detail...
I'll email my teacher and see what she thinks...

If you're only gonna focus on how wikileaks is affecting australia then i would say that you will probably lack detail...
Ask your teacher if yuo can do it about wikileaks in general. She might allow you so just ask :)

Not with all the Rudd-America leaks atm, there is enough to go on with for 5-6 mins I think

A great idea though!

Yeah i think you posted a few ideas and wikileaks was there :P just talking about KRudd could possibly get you 5 minutes depending on how much detail and information you put together

You sure did: http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,34394.15.html

The requirement of it being an Australian issue is a bit dubious. It would depend on the school/teacher. But, personally, I think any issue that matters to Australia should be allowed. For wikileaks, it is an issue of importance for Australia because it impinges on how we are seen on the world stage and tests how politicians define our values. Assange being an Australian citizen heightens the focus on Australia's dealing with the issue. And then you have links to civil liberties and to the extent that they apply overseas and when convenient. I wasn't aware of the lack of constitutional freedom of speech in Aus but that is something you could raise. You could also draw on our obligations under international law/conventions such as UN ones.

Ok to confirm (From my teacher)

To quote the VCAA English Study Design ".............that debate a topical issue, which has appeared in the Australian media since September of the previous year".......(2010)

Well it satisfies both of those, so it can be done!
Just gotta work out what to focus on now...

Oral Topic Ideas

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone could suggest oral presentation topics for english?
They have to be current issues, and on a state-national scale (not international).
I was thinking about doing how local MPs are spying on voters because I know everything to do with the information privacy laws (having done IT last year) and I read 1984 in year 10 - great read.

But then i thought, it would be hard to say that this is a bad thing to do and could not really list out reasons why we shouldn't be spied on:
(1 - It's illegal
 2 - It's an intrusion of privacy)
Rebuttal:
1 - ?? They are doing it so they can decide how to get you to vote for them, most likely you'll benefit...

Anyone else have any ideas?

There's already a thread for this  here: http://vce.atarnotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,34394.0.html

But to answer your question, I'm not sure that this warrants an issue because to the best of my knowledge this has not being the subject of public discourse. I may be wrong though. Unless this has appeared in newspapers and other public opinion media then I doubt you can use it.

Depends on your school, I think. My oral is set somewhere between 9-11 February. Generally some time in Term 1?.. though definitely within Semester 1.
