Just found this site on commonly misspelled words (a good one though), and as I really suck at spelling, decided to share it here: http://marvin.cs.uidaho.edu/~heckendo/misspell.html

Its a long but comprehensive list...

Unacceptable is pretty strong, it's not like the examiner is reading your essay and taking marks off every time they see you use an american spelling. In fact, if you use either consistently (ie Z or S) it's not really a big deal.

Really.  In English Language I would say so, but not so much in regular English.

I reckon you'd get punished for 'color' instead of 'colour' but probably not 'realize' instead of 'realise' or 'meter' instead of 'metre.'

Haha, I knew it was American't spelling, hence the ':P'

American spelling is unacceptable for VCE life in general, thought I'd give you guys a heads up there.
No need to thank me.

And I don't think it matters that much, unless you do something like English Language where everything is very specific.

EDIT: Everyone already said that

You may be right, my teacher marked a girl down 2 full marks for several Americanised works.

Well it does say "to the conventions of Australian English" or words to that effect... But think MBSS' teacher was extremely harsh - how this affects an essay that much I do not know. And some words also have a lot of crossover. Agree with what stonecold said. Although the "ise" etc. ending is Australian, scientists, for example, tend to use "ize". I read this somewhere earlier in the year when I was confused about this.

That's your teacher. He or she probably had good intentions to try and get Australian students to write Australian english (or really, english from england...lol)
VCE examiners I know don't mark down for american english. As long as you use one or the other, stick to the pattern and they don't mind. I think examiners understand that our generation has grown up with books, internet - many of these sources from america. Even google tries to correct me when I use 's' instead of 'z'. It's not our fault that american english is what we're surrounded with so they shouldn't mark us down. :)

Remember, as long as it is something not outrageous,English exams are marked in such a way that students are rewarded for what they did correctly. They are looking for stuff to award you, and not penalize you. In the end, its all about who had ticked the most boxes. But the fact lies, examiners are humans; so don't piss them off too much.

Your teacher is over the top if that's a 10 point scale.

I live with an assessor, just asked and she reckons that american spelling is a pretty minor point

Okay, that list is ridiculous. No one is going to mispel the days of the week.. They are not "hard to spell words"

And yes correct spelling is important for all Englishs, but particularly with literature and english language as they meant to be more 'advanced' and so more pedantic about grammar-related things...
