Our school sent this to us today, after they received it from the VCAA

Quote

Notice No. 179/2010 - 1 December 2010

2010 Mathematical Methods (CAS) Examination 2

For Principals and VCE Coordinators
Main Points
•   Four schools contacted the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) last week to express concern that students using a particular calculator were potentially disadvantaged in answering question 3 parts (e) and (f) of the Mathematical Methods (CAS) Examination 2.
•   The VCAA analysed the results of students using this technology with the results of all students sitting the paper and found no significant differences in responses to question 3 (f) worth 2 marks.
•   However, the VCAA noted a potential issue for the performance of these students on question 3 (e) worth 4 marks.
•   The VCAA calculated an estimated score for question 3(e) for all students based on their individual performance on the rest of the examination.
•   To ensure that no student will be disadvantaged, the VCAA will award all students with either their estimated score or their achieved score on question 3(e), whichever is the higher.

Action required
Principals/VCE Coordinators should communicate this information to teachers, students and parents as appropriate.

Critical dates
VCE results are released to students on Monday 13 December.

Additional information
Any queries should be directed to Joe Pellegrino, Assistant General Manager, Assessment Centre on 9225 2242 or email: [email protected]

Gotta love the secrecy/doublespeak.

What are they doing exactly?

I didn't even do the pyramid question, the only part i remember doing was letting the derivative equal zero.

It's not that much "doublespeak"

Your score for f) remains as is, your score for e) is calculated based on how you went on the rest of the exam. I assume if you got 90% on the rest of the exam you'll be given 3.6?

Yeah, this is what I mean.  How are they doing the estimated score?

I think they'll probably look at the calculations of 'similar questions' and see what you scored for those. And maybe use that..?

IMO i think the easiest way for them to allocate marks is average out your exam mark (%) multiplied by the amount of marks available (4)

I don't understand, what happens to the students that actually got the questions correct?

One would assume that but the message does say "all". Hopefully that's just poor phrasing though :S
