Tea.towel's Biology questions
« on: December 22, 2010, 09:54:59 am »

Hey guys,

I'm taking Biology 3/4 in 2011 and there'll be plenty of questions coming from me.

Hopefully you guys can help answer my questions and get some benefit from it too ! Unless you've already done the course.

Anyway, first question: [ I probably don't have to know this but it's bugging me]

Where are chlorophylls located exactly? I found two pieces of info on pg 73 and 74  of NOB.
"The main light trapping pigments are chlorophylls, which are located on  the grana membranes in chloroplasts"
"Chlorophyll in grana of chloroplast"

So which is it? Or is it both ?

Cheers!

Those could easily be two ways of saying the same thing.

It also appears to depend upon the organism. Here's the quote from my reference dictionary

Quote
Chlorophyll...located in chloroplasts except in cyanobacteria where borne on numerous photosynthetic membranes

I beleive either way would work, but i'd rather say in the grana, as they actually contain the chlorophyll :)

Doubt it, I don't see it being asked directly.

There is sometimes a question that will ask about the light-dependent stage of photosynthesis and where it occurs and they want you to be specific and say in the grana / thylakoid membranes. Another way of asking this would be "where is chlorophyll found?" I'm not sure if they've asked that before though. If you're unsure in a question you can always answer with two levels of specificity - i.e.. chloroplast in the grana, and that's fine as long as all information is correct.

Theyve asked in exams to label parts of a chloroplast and what happens in those parts. Essentially, there are only two parts, the stroma and the grana in which the light independent and light dependent stages occur respectively.

yeah this is right:

at a year 12 level, just knowing it's at (in or on) the grana as opposed to the stroma is sufficient.

LOLsure jw ;)

New Question: Can you guys tell me how deep I have to know photosynthesis and cellular respiration (basically ch.3 NOB)
I don't feel that NOB goes deep enough for the "light-independent reactions"

You need to know the inputs and outputs of each stage, where the stages occur, what ocurs in each stage and thats the basics. In the exam u will need to know more for a good mark but u build up knowledge on them over time through extensive reading and practise papers
