Torn between typing/handwriting my prep notes..

Hello all. I'm back from my holiday and I would like to commence my personal headstart on my 2011 subjects.. however I'm extremely confused/unsure if I should handwrite or type my new notes. I have gotten all my textbooks, and printed out the study design in order to refer to. In your experience for such headstart notes, should I write or type? I'm pretty sure writing would consume much more time however it might help me retain information for when school starts.. while typing can be quicker and neater, but it'd kill my eyes over all the hours. I don't know. Did you handwrite or type your summer notes?

I always hand-write. For me, its faster and I can easily format it however I like.

Well, since you basically have a lot of rote-learning subs, i.e. legal&psych, I'd recommend you to type them up because that way you can gather a lot of images/diagrams etc from the internet to paste them in, and you can also format them however/whenever you like.

You can also print your notes off anytime and just stick them into a book or something to refer to.



BUT if you do have the time, try to handwrite.

Sometimes, I write notes that I don't even look at, just the notion of writing and thinking of it helps me remember too...

Handwriting for Psychology...but then again I have plenty of time (y11) but generally the majority of people will say to handwrite as you're more likely to retain information over time.

For a few reasons:
1. It's the holidays. You have time anyway.
2. The formatting thing is so true! The time you gain by typing everything up is usually lost in grappling with the formatting.
3. You do retain the information more.
4. Because writing requires more effort, when I handwrite notes I generally only write stuff that's really important, or stuff I would constantly refer back to. And when you type, you run the risk of just including everything, which may render the notes useless in the end. (I wouldn't want to read through pages and pages of typed notes to find, say, one formula, or one date).

Though I'll admit that handwriting it is almost always better for retention of knowledge, faster than typing? Bit of a stretch. xD

Yes, the action of actually writing it down clearly improves data-retention.

Off topic: Why the hell did iNerd change his name to ATAR? I recall countless posts beginning with, 'it's iNerd not INERD/inerd/INERD.' You were so pedantic about it, now you change it... Explain?

I'm slow at formatting on MS word...

Especially maths equations or chem equations or physics forumlas, way faster by hand (for me anyway).

Attention seeker (my opinion). Also what is strange, he changed his name to the symbol (a word/phrase can be a symbol) of a system that only a few days ago he was suggesting should be scrapped for his own... (lol, I think I just started a massive debate with him...)

Darren, my opinion would be that if you are looking for speed (as you are doing no sciences), typing is the way to go. However, with Further (and if you want to write notes) I would go with hand-written just because it allows freedoms of formatting as easiness to write equations and draw relevant graphs/plots. However, with retention:
