Arts Timetable Help

Hi guys :D

I'm not going to be able to go to any of the information sessions as I live interstate (Tasmania represent!), so I want somebody to look over my subject choices for Sem 1 + 2 just to make sure they are ok - I'm studying the standard Bachelor of Arts. I know that Arts is very much whatever-you-want, but I'd just feel reassured if somebody had a quick look over and made sure they were ok. I emailed the Arts faculty the day before yesterday but they haven't replied as of yet and I'm getting anxious!

Semester 1
ATS1353 (Australian Politics and Government) [Politics]
ATS1356 (Public Relations Writing) [Public Relations - Berwick]
ATS1279 (Media and Culture) [Communications]
ECC1000 (Principles of Microeconomics) [Economics]

Semester 2
ATS1326 (Contemporary Worlds 2) [Politics]
ATS1897 (Public Relations Principles and Practice) [Public Relations - Berwick]
ATS1280 (Communications and Society) [Communications]
ECC1100 (Principles of Macroeconomics) [Economics]

I understand that I need to get approval from BusEco to do my Economics units, but looking through the size of the lectures and the number of offers given out I'm hoping I'll be ok - there are about 800 lecture spots!

Also, what is the workload like in the units I've picked. I really want to be able to transfer into Arts/Law in the second year, so I am aiming for straight HDs. Should it be easy or should I maybe reassess my selections and replace them with easier subjects?

Thanks in advance! :)

Looks like a good range of units. There is a politics unit ATS1873 (http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2011handbooks/units/ATS1873.html) which is basically the same as Contemporary Worlds 2. I found that i got more out of this subject compared to contemporary worlds but I did love the lecturer of contemporary worlds which made it fun. Just something else for you to think about.

I did politics in semester 1 the workload isnt too bad and contemporary worlds 2 is about the same. Most arts units dont require too much work

I considered doing that subject but went for Contemporary because it had no exam! I generally do far better internally than I do in exams (I'm a very bad exam sitter) so I thought I'd play to my strengths. Would I be right in thinking this or is the internal work going to be ten times harder as a result?

Hmmm contemporary worlds had an exam last semester. I think with the assessment in the handbook they have combined the essay and the exam into one category as i doubt they would not have an exam for it. Uni exams in arts arent too hard to do well in...as long as you pay attention in the final lecture for each subject you either pick up on the subtle hints from the lecturer or they may be nice and give you some of the exam questions.

Somebody who actually goes to monash might want to confirm that those writing classes aren't actually at the Berwick campus

I'm reading from the course handbook (http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2011handbooks/units/ATS1326.html) and this is what it says:

Assessment
Written work: (90%)
Class participation: (10%)

So I'm not sure! I might do one of the other politically oriented subjects like International Relations if that's the case :P

Quick question as well Steph, in WES once I submit my enrolment can I not change the units that I have picked? It's not letting me enrol in ECC1000 (probably because I need to do it manually with BusEco if my request gets approved. Can I just enrol with three and then add one later? Also, do I need to add Sem 2 subjects in now as well or can I do that later?

PR? I've put it into WES and it seems to be showing up as being there (http://grabs.benzoenator.net/fe2dc0cde9cd124245f3dbab0e08cdce.png). It also appears in MUTTS!

Yeah with a few of my subjects thats how they described the assessment and the first lecture they clarified what written work consisted of.
You can change your units in WES. Just make sure you click submit and get a transaction number after you have made a change. I did semester 2 at the same time just so it was done and i went back and changed it closer to semester 2 when i decided i wanted to change a subject. Im not too sure if you can just enrol in three right now...i dont think it should be a problem but someone else on here may know a bit more about it

Given that Berwick is at least 20kms away from Clayton, you might want to get some advice on how easy it will be to study a subject there

Mmm, I had a look at it. I drive, so it's not much of an issue plus I'm going to be living on Clayton campus anyway so I'm pretty close as it is. I've looked at the timetable and it's a 9am lecture followed straight away by tutorials, so I'll only have to go down there once a week!

In terms of Contemporary Worlds vs International Relations, I agree with Steph that Int Relations was more useful (I did both last semester). However, Int Relations covers a LOT more than Contemporary Worlds, and in greater depth. So will require a deeper understanding of concepts and more reading as two topics are covered per week.  Contemporary worlds seemed to be one of those subjects students in tutes could just use general understanding to bullshit their way through participation and each topic is more broad.
