Anyone know how much you have to pay if you catch the bus to Monash?

Here are the myki fares :)

http://www.myki.com.au/Fares/Metro-fares/myki-metro-fare-calculators/default.aspx

For a daily, if you're zone 1+2 won't cost more than $5 but if you're zone 1 or 2 about $2.

yes, if you go on the bus, they will generally make you buy a zone 2, 2 hour or daily ticket from the driver before they let you on.

theres also a shuttle bus from huntingdale -> uni but that costs 1$ per trip

A yearly Myki will save you several dollars.
A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

How does myki work? Is it like putting credit on a mobile phone?

For primary and secondary students only, unfortunately

Half yearly - $220.00
Yearly -$422.00

And yes, similar to that but you need to touch on and touch off every time you use it. Here is the registration form http://www.myki.com.au/ArticleDocuments/160/VPT%20Student%20Concession%20Form_2011_REV%20web.pdf.aspx

Isn't that pass only for primary and secondary school students?

Those above prices for a yearly myki are only available to primary and secondary students, not tertiary.

You can however get myki pass which is similar to that of a yearly, not quite as cheap.

Quote
myki pass

myki pass gives you current weekly, monthly or yearly discounts. You can buy 7 consecutive days or between 28 and 365 days of consecutive travel. For example, if you commute to work and want a three month pass, you can buy a myki pass for 90 days of travel.

myki pass features

Stores value as travel days
Can store 7 consecutive days or any number of consecutive days from 28 to 365 in your zone(s) of travel
Starts when you first touch on
Fares based on Weekly, Monthly, Yearly and Date-to-Date tickets
Comes with a myki money balance of $0

What is myki?
A myki is a durable plastic card – similar in size to a credit card – which you will be able to use to pay for travel on public transport. myki can store value and lasts for many years. Just keep your myki topped up, carry it with you in your wallet or purse and you’ll always be ready to go. You will never have to stop to buy tickets or carry loose change for the ticket machine again.
