Declining an irregular offer??
« on: January 26, 2011, 08:47:12 pm »
Say if you applied for an irregular offer are got accepted, are you required to accept that offer? What if you changed your mind (oops) and decide you want to go with the offer you got in the first round...? Can you just say no thanks to the irregular offer, even though you've already applied and been accepted?

I think you lose your right to get any course if you decline, though I may be wrong.

But seriously, unless some circumstances change massively, how can you be so indecisive?

To be extremely sure, I would call the institution that made you the Irregular Offer and ask.

I don't know anyone that's been in this situation so I'm not sure and VTAC doesn't administer this either.

I didn't ask, but a while ago a guy from the uni told me "You're expected to accept". I don't know if that means it's just bad etiquette to decline it, or that you are actually required to accept it.

I know I was indecisive =/ however in my defense, when I called the Uni, just before I made my decision to apply for an irregular offer, I received information that I later found out to be false (from a friend who went to their course info day). It was this info that I based my decision on, and then it came out to be false, leaving me in a nasty predicament.

If you just did it, say in the last day, if you log onto the VTAC myinfo site, you may be able to press "withdraw" if it is still 'pending'. But if its been 'approved' you can't take it back...

Ugh, unfortunately the guy said I had a "very" good chance at getting the offer, now i'm hoping I get rejected =/.

My friend was in this position and she just declined the irregular offer and accepted the first round offer.
It's not disallowed, it's just 'stealing places from other students'.

My Monash enrollment is tomorrow so to decline my irregular offer, I just simply ignore it and continue with Monash?

An excerpt from an e-mail I received from Melb uni regarding irregular offers.

Quote
Please be aware of the consequences of submitting an irregular offer before you submit one. Approval of an irregular offer will result in a binding agreement between the University and you that we will offer you an irregular offer in Round 2 and that you will accept it.

But I guess it's as mavisgibbons said:

it's just 'stealing places from other students'.

in that case, I'll stick to my irregular offer and be happy :)

Yeah they actually can't do anything if you don't accept the offer.
My friend applied for an irregular offer to UoM Arts, then rejected the irregular offer and took her first offer of Arts at LaTrobe (wanted to major in something odd) and then decided she hated that so applied midyear to Melbourne Arts and got another offer.
I swear, they do not even care.  It's not like they'll hold a grudge against you, judging by the above story.
Her student number was exactly the same both times too (she has the same one now as she did when she was given the irregular offer and in her portal it comes up with 'Bachelor of Arts - Declined' and after that 'Bachelor of Arts - Admitted'.

Pretty fun stuff.
