I can't enrol into the beginner Chinese subjects online, either, due to not satisfying the "non-study package requisite conditions."  I assume this is because enrolment into Chinese is contingent upon the placement interview and once I've done that they'll manually enrol me in the appropriate stream.

At my advisor appointment I expressed interest in the Diploma of Languages and was told that they strongly advise students not to enrol in it until the end of the first year, presumably to ensure people enrolling in it first try the subject and are certain they like it and have the capacity to finish it.  I was asked to instead enrol in my language as breadth, so right now my first year is 50% science and 50% breadth (the breadth comprising of the finance subjects I initially wanted to do as breadth -- FNCE10001, FNCE20001, as well as Chinese which I had intended for the DipLang -- CHIN10005, CHIN10006).  Apparently, at the end of my first year, I can enrol in the DipLang and the language subjects I study as breadth will instead be credited to the diploma and that will free up the breadth slots again for use in later years.  There is however a 37.5 point limit on level 1 breadth subjects, but fortunately one of the finance subjects I am doing is level 2 so I don't go over that limit, even with the language.  If that would be a problem for you, though, I'd recommend straightening it out earlier, but I don't think the enrolment lapse date is until mid-February, so there's plenty of time.

Given that the two language subjects will eventually be credited to the DipLang and I get the breadth slots back, I don't really have a problem doing it this way, because the course structure should be exactly the same over the course of the four years as if I had enrolled in the DipLang immediately.  I am not sure how this works with fast-tracking or any other degree other than the BSc, though.

what breaths are you enrolling to now? since the interview is AFTER my lapse date, isnt that mean i couldn't be approved to enroll into CHIN10005 and CHIN10006? if thats the case, my bro adviced me to simply put some breaths down, then do a subject change later in uni...

If you haven't studied Chinese before, ever, and want to enrol in Chinese 1A I'm 100% sure you will not need an interview. If the portal doesn't allow you to enrol, just get your student centre to enrol manually.

If you are ethnically Chinese but just can't write properly and want to start from Chinese 1A they will kick you out of it though.

I can probably help with subject enrolment, but I can't remember the course enrolment process.

Thanks but I eventually figured out the process. Only problem is I have to decide whether I want to begin my diploma this year because it means I have to delete 2 Arts subjects from my timetable. Do you know whether it is possible to start a major/minor in second year? As in the level one subjects of say, History, for example?

I don't know much about the intricacies of the bachelor of arts, but you're defined as having completed a major/minor if you have done all of the subjects required for it by the end of your degree, regardless of whether you do 2 per year or you do all 6 in first semester overloading. Obviously you couldn't do that, but the point is you don't have to start it at any particular time; just make sure you've done all the subjects you need by the end of your degree. If you have to elect the major or something, you can do that at any time by asking the student centre to change it for you.

I don't know how you're planning to structure your diploma, but it's best to get it started straight away. It's also best (in my opinion) not to cross-credit much/at all and instead to do it alongside your bachelor for the 4 years. Not only does this give you an incredible amount more freedom to play around with your degree and do combinations of subjects that would previously have been impossible due to the semesters in which they run, but since language subjects generally only run in one semester per year, failing even one subject will add another year to your diploma. If you start now and plan to do the diploma in the first three years, even if you accidentally fuck up once, you can take it again that time next year and you won't be screwing yourself over.

Okay, that's good then, it'll make my decision a whole lot easier. My problem was Psychology takes up two of my four subjects and then my language would take up the other two leaving me without any options of beginning my second major or minor in first year. I just was worried about missing the opportunity to try a number of possible majors in the first year and discover what I am really passionate about. I could try different Arts subjects but then I would have to begin my diploma second year which doesn't sound like the best idea from what you've said.

If you take one language subject per semester for 4 years you should have 3 subjects free each semester to play around with. It also means you can pretty much treat semester 3 as a quasi-first year.

I didn't know that was even possible! I was under the impression 1A and 1B had to be done in the same year. That way I could do Psychology plus try another major out. Thanks for that tip!

No worries. The diploma works the same way as the majors in that you just have to make sure you've done all the right subjects by the end.

Try chucking all of the subjects you've got planned into an excel table. Make sure that you check what semesters each of the subjects run in and which prerequisites are needed for each. If you can plan your course so that you do all the subjects you need by the end of it, do all the prereqs for subjects before you take said subjects and have every subject planned for semesters they actually run in, you're fine.

That's such a good idea. I did that the first time but I really should factor in my diploma now and work out the best way possible to get where I want to be. Thank you again! It really is appreciated :)

Are there interviews to get into languages? or is this just for chinese?
