Couldn't wait until I simultaneously got 100 karma and 2000 posts? Damn you!

On the upside, I like this system better

I expect a gift basket with every Respect point, what can I say

But seriously, I don't really have any problems with the new system other than I think a blank slate might have been a better way to start it off. The upvoting/downvoting probably works better than karma and is more intuitive as well (plus you can hide posts this way).

Is there a bolded function for a post that gets to +6?

Mod Edit by Mao: Bold? is this what you wanted? :P

Yes, but more awesome

I don't mind either way - I don't really think there's much of a difference.

But one thing I don't really like about the new system is that I can't explain why I +1 or -1 someone.

Before, there was a little comment box where you could say nice things about the people you were +1 karma-ing, which (I think) made it more meaningful.

There isn't but that's a great idea and can be added in.

This can be achieved via PM or replying to their comment in the thread.

But replying in the thread could lead to off topic subjects and arguments!!!

Isn't one of the main points of the like system to introduce a greater amount of activity on the whole karma/respect scene? So explaining each one would probably be a pain

Personally, I preferred the way the karma system was, and couldn't care less if people abuse it.

I can see one problem in the future though. If members here develop a culture of voting on every post they care to read (like in digg/urbandictionary/reddit), then soon respect would be proportional to traffic, which implies maths people would have elevated respect compared to others.

Well, the karma system already had that problem, but it wasn't that noticeable because the system was abused. Maybe instead of having a +respect rating, we should have a respect/postcount rating to give an indication of 'quality' of posts?

But now that this system is in place, can I suggest putting in two counters for +ve respect: "thanks" and "lol", it would be a nice categorization.

Yeah, it has the potential to just turn out like facebook where people click like on whatever.

The old karma system where you add to enter a reason kind of prevented that kind of impulse voting, it was actually one of the upsides of the old system i reckon.

Mao's idea is good but it could penalise people who post a lot and dont always make it over the threshold of likes. Where as someone with 10 posts not a long time member but all are helpful would have a massive rating.

I think any system of this nature is bound to have flaws.

I second likes and dislikes being a bit more transparent. Anyway, is it just me, or am I the only one on the 'Top 10 Most Respected' list? =/ Was hoping to see a list of how well the karma rankings translated into respect but I can't find a working list. I imagine this might just be a permissions thing hence why I can only see myself?

And damn, that ends my karma streak. 530 something positives without a single negative :P C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER.

It's being worked on. The Top 10 List is currently in no way relevant to anything. :p
