why do you have to take two really thick books every day?

Get a decent backpack, but it'll be kinda pricey. Some of the places on Smith St in fitzroy are having sales about now. Shoulder bags are terrible if you need to carry more than lecture notes/pen, especially if you're taking a laptop.

You dont need to bring the big books for the subjects everyday, they are for reference or pre-reading and so do it from home - otherwise it's too much of a hassle! So you could even just use a bigger laptop bag that can squeeze in lecture notes/stationary if you wanted.

The 'table' in most lecture theatres is slightly bigger than your average mousepad.

Definitely not lol.

Screens larger than 13" are really for home use only, a laptop with that screen size is going to be a pain to use at uni

Yes, definitely.  I remember having to bring my 15.6" laptop to uni because that was the only laptop I had.  Boy, can I tell you that it was a very, very, very bad idea.

On the topic of bags, if you don't have many lecture notes (ie. not maths subjects or arts subjects with readers), then a satchel should be fine if you're a satchel person.  But other than that, if you carry around a shoulder bag, that's perfectly normal.

A 15.6" laptop has a massive screen and weighs around 3-4 kgs.  Having that weight plus the weight of lecture notes (maths ones) causes massive back strains and definitely not something to be walking around uni with.

Don't get me wrong though, 15.6" laptops are great for using at home but if you're after mobility as such is the case of uni, a 11.3" should suffice.  Trust me, making a few hundred dollars investment is well worth it when you really need to bring your laptop to uni.

Hope that explains it because I was being subtle about it before.  Sorry. :)

I'm in a similar position to you, i was thinking of getting one of those messenger/satchel bags but i'd probably be taking my textbooks to read during gaps (or haha maybe wishful thinking). I reckon if you like 2+ textbooks youll be walking lopsided and it will be a struggle with those kind of bags. I used a backpack for year 12 and sometimes i took near all of my locker home and while i felt it, you seriously feel it a lot less if its spread out across youre entire back properly. A messenger bag will probably be pretty terrible for that.

If you want to study in your large gaps in-between classes, can't you just get the books from the library?

Basically what I was going to say.
The uni librarys would have a few copies of each text book and if not just ask a friend of yours if you can borrow theirs for an hour or two.
