Because water is also a polar molecule

Polar dissolves polar

Because they are able to form HYdrogen bond with water, and hence dissolve.
Ancient Persian Proverb; " I Wept because i had no Shoes, until i saw a man with no feet!"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

I'm getting this straight from the Unit 1/2 Chemistry Book here, good revision :)

For Example, you have Ethanol which is err

C2H5 - OH  (You see the OH bonding, thats a hydrogen bond) (Its also polar because uneven charges, not symmetrical)  , In H2O (It also has uneven charges, and is not symmetrical as well, so both are polar)

C2H5 - OH -----  O 2H     In this, the OH will form a hydrogen bonding with the O from H2O. Hence, C2H5 will not be separated from H2O as two different layers, however, are intertwined together (dissolved) .

If there are no bonding between water molecules and the solute, polar and non polar, you will see two distinct layers

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

Thank you all!
also, why is it called polypropylene? is it because propyl is a monomer used in addition polymerization? and what is the name of CH3COONa?

thanks!!!!!

For the second qs, it is sodium ethanoate, or sodium acetate.

propylene = propene, its just the IUPAC name (internationally known common name)

CH3COONa is a compound, Sodium Ethanoate

sorry didn't see poly, its just an addition polymer made by propene monomers

CH3OCH2CH3 is an ether, so its methoxy (for CH3O) ethane (for CH2CH3) --> methoxyethane

(alternatively the non-IUPAC name is methyl ethyl ether)

just remember: "Like dissolves in like"
non-polar substances will dissolve in non-polar solvents
and polar substances will dissolve in polar solvents
for the reasons listed above

Why do non-polars dissolve in non-polars? I can understand when they're polar, but if they're non-polar... why don't they just brush passed each other happily? Assuming the exterior of both molecules have a like partial charge.

I'm not entirely sure of this, but
seeing that polar substances dissolve in polar solvents due to their Intramolecular forces bonding compatibility, i'd assume the same goes for non-polar substances,

lemme find my yr 11 texbook lol

Edit: My own question: why will ethanol dissolve in octane

are double, triple bonds etc ever stronger than hydrogen bonding?

also, what are instantaneous dipoles and how strong are they in relation to double, triple bonds?

ty!

intermolecular (between molecules) bonding is always stronger than intramolecular (within molecules) bonding, so yes.
In relation to your dipoles question, i suggest you visit this:

wordy explanations will get a bit confusing, that website is really helpful.
