Why do people want to do Dentistry?

Is it just for the sake of getting a stable, well-paying job? Because I honestly can't think of a job that sounds worse than being a dentist.

it is much better than a well-paid job
A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

It seems like a pretty calm and chill lifestyle. You can choose the hours you want to work, doesnt appear to be that stressful. Gives you a lot of time to spend with family/friends/hobbies etc... On top of that the pay is massive!

Dentists can earn huge amounts of money and charge at high rates. Also, it takes less time to finish dentistry than it would for other courses such as Medicine, where you'd have to do further study in order to specialise in specific areas. Once you come out of finishing a dentistry degree, I think you can start working from the get-go. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. From what I've been told, dentists aren't capped by Medicare or something of the like, which means that they can earn as much as they like. The hours are really good as well. The whole aspect of looking at mouths/teeth/gums day-in, day-out doesn't really appeal to me though.

It's not actually all that, Dent, when explored in depth, is apparently very very VERY fascinating and interesting, just like any other career path.

I've heard a lot of stuff about facial reconstruction, maxillofacial surgery etc and personally I reckon it sounds awesome!

Don't really see how that's evidence. As far as I can see (from Google that is), it's just an urban myth with little evidence supporting it. The rate of mental health issues is definitely higher among doctors and dentists though, so that'd definitely pave the way for suicide. Not sure about it being the highest suicide rate though - you can't really measure that without measuring the suicide rate of every other occupation right? Regardless of that, my lecturer said that as for doctors, the suicide rate is about the same as the general population. However the rate of successful suicides is far higher - I guess due to their knowledge and access to such means :P Could possibly be the same for dentists too but who knows. Not particularly keen on heading to journals and such to find out.

my sister is a dentist, she says its a fucking great lifestyle.
works 4 days a week, part-time, earns 6 figures, the rest of the time shes sitting around watching tv going out with friends n shit. seriously can buy ANYTHING she wants. 3 months out of uni, she bought a new mercedes.

dunno where that myth of high suicide rates came from.

Not sure where the 'highest suicide rate' came from, but heaps of people I've spoken to reckon that's so :P I guess it's just an opinion. Just because someone suffers in her career, doesn't mean it's the same for anyone else

I'm aiming to get into postgrad dent mainly because I enjoy health science oriented career and the job security it has to offer. You can basically start working as soon as you graduate and choose to specialise in different areas later in your career. Definitely allows time to get married, start a family etc

So, I'm guessing 90% of dent students don't really have a passion for teeth?

That's a generalisation you can't make.
