Hi,
I need help
I'm in year 12 and was just starting to really think about my future
I would love to be a doctor but I don't think I'll get into any medical courses with my VCE subjects,
I am currently doing:
- english
- futher math
- biology
- physical education
- health and human development

and it is far to late to change my subjects!!!

by the way, i have done units 1+2 for chemistry, maths method and legal studies
and i have not talked to the careers counsellor at my school yet

My question is, do you guys think it is possible to become a doctor in the future or at least get into any medical uni courses?

Unfortunately Chemistry 3/4 is a pre-requisite (for MBBS @ Monash anyway...)

Hey Shiny,

For Monash undergrad you need to do Chemistry with a 30 raw in it. Almost all med undergrad courses require methods/and or chemistry. If you don't have that then you can do it after your first degree. Best to do science/biomed usually and you'll need a science and math (Depending on where you go) for undergrad.

Prerequisites for Bachelor of Science

A study score of at least 25 in English/English Language/Literature or at least 30 in ESL.
At least 25 in Mathematical Methods and at least 25 in one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
The minimum ENTER for 2011 was 85 (guaranteed for international students).

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

Unfortunately not. Undergraduate degrees in Medicine generally require a raw score of 30 in Chemistry (as previous comments have stated). And as Water said, You will be required those scores for biomedicine at University of Melbourne.

However, if you really have the drive to enter medicine, you can do this: 1) Take up bachelor of science at Monash University (as you're doing Biology and English, you should be fine as long as you achieve the desired SS), take the GAMSAT in your final (or second final) year at your undergraduate degree and apply for graduate Medicine. In fact, you don't even need to take bachelor of science to apply for graduate Medicine as long as your GAMSAT, GPA and Interview scores are good enough (unless you're planning to go to UoM in which you need certain prerequisite subjects when you're doing your undergraduate course).

It's going to be hard but if you have the drive then you'll be alright. :)

Yeah, there's heaps of ways into Medicine if you're determined. My friend got into Deakin with a 50, transferred into Biomed and then studied
and got into postgrad med lol (at deakin)

Yeah, science at monash is probably your best bet all things considered.

You can take MTH1010 which is the methods equivalent at monash if you really wanted to and transfer to science at melbourne or biomed at monash or something. You could probably transfer after half a year, depending on how well your grades are.

Another thing which has already been stated but which id like to drill in is, you don't need to do a science degree to get into medicine.

You could get into medicine with an arts degree, all you need to do is satisfy the GAMSAT subjects to be able to do well (1st year bio & chem, VCE or equivalent Physics). You could do these in electives or breadth if you really wanted to. That'll get you into deakin or monash which are fine univeristies.

Melbourne has another whole set of subjects it wants in addition to the gamsat so it might be a bit harder to do those outside of a science degree but still my point stands.

Also, remember it isn't just doing well in the gamsat, you need a high GPA as well if you think youll get a higher GPA in a course that isnt science and still have room to do the gamsat subjects i say go for it.

Remember too that 2/3s of the umatGAMSAT(oops..accidentally wrote umat..thanks zien) is non science stuff, writing and comprehension and all that.

hey guys i got a question, if you're doing a 4 year degree can u do the GAMSAT in second year or can you only do it on your second last year (i.e. 3rd year) and final year (i.e. 4th year) of an undergraduate degree?

Ultimate and penultimate years, regardless of length. So you can do it in 3rd and 4th year of a 4 year degree
