What if you don't have a prerequisite?

OK this is just for a friend. What happens if you don't have a prerequisite for a uni course? Not that you haven't reached the minimum score, but that you haven't done the subject altogether.

Do you have literally zero chance of admission even though you satisfy all other prerequisites and ATAR?

I would say so, as middle band is only for those who haven't achieved the minimum ATAR...(Credit goes to Gloamy :P)
2010: Business Management [47]
2011: English [44]   |   Chemistry [45]  |   Methods [44]   |   Specialist [42]   |   MUEP Chemistry [5.0]   |   ATAR: 99.60
UMAT: 69 | 56 | 82 | = [69 / 98th Percentile]
2012: MBBS I @ Monash

I could be wrong, but I believe you can satisfy the pre-reqs in at least some cases by doing some kind of "pre-course preparatory" type thing.
VCE 2010-2011:
English | Philosophy | Latin | Chemistry | Physics | Methods | UMEP Philosophy
ATAR: 99.95

2012-2014: BSc (Chemistry/Philosophy) @ UniMelb

Currently taking students for summer chemistry and physics tutoring! PM for details.

In most cases yes, not even going to be considered. But in some rare cases the university will allow students without pre-req.

(iffets didn't have bio which was a pre-req for dent.. she says that most people didn't have it, actually. Though this is a special case because they added it mid-year or something. Also, I have a friend who didn't do methods but is now doing eng at swinburne; he communicated with the university directly and they "accepted him" around open day time with only one condition: that he got >80 ATAR)

It depends what course you're talking about, but for the vast majority of cases they won't even be considered. They can transfer mid year or something?

Haha.  Cheers.  Good to know that people do read the forum quite regularly.  :D

m@tty would be right in this.  99% of cases, with no communication with the selection officers, you won't be considered.  And if it is a Go8 uni (UoM and Monash in Victoria) then chances are extremely slim, if there was a chance at all.

Note also that if it's an interview or folio pre-requisite and you want to negotiate that, it will be extremely difficult to.

Just as a point of interest - for those that get 99.95 - could you then basically gain entry into any course you want?

Any course for which you've met all the prereqs for including all subjects, folios, interviews, tests and if applicable, selection kits, then yes.

But even if you get 99.95 and you wanted to study, let's say, "Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art)" at RMIT in the City, and you didn't submit a folio and/or didn't submit a pre-selection kit, then most likely no.

If she hasn't done bio, she can do the bridging course via Open Universities Australia or whatever before VTAC opens.

I'm sure they'd let them take a summer program to catch up.
Like with Medicine Bachelor, Bachelor of Surgery you can not take biology but take a summer class to get upto date with the basics.

But that's because Bio was never a formal pre-req to begin with.

Depending what subject it is, some universities have units that can be completed that would cover the prerequisites.
Methods | Specialist | Chemistry | English | UMEP Maths | Cisco | IT Applications
