Year 7 Scholarship Tests

Does anyone have any idea of what they have on these, and how they can be prepared for?

I've been asked to help a family friend's son with it, but I've never really sat them myself so I'm not too sure about the specifics. The company that writes them is ACER, and whilst I've looked on their website, I'd like to get an idea from someone that has done it before.

Just out of interest, does anyone know if they bear any resemblance to the Selective School Entry Papers, or the old ICAS/UNSW competitions?
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.

I did one in year nine... it was pretty straightforward, not something you really need to study for.
From memory, there was basic maths, non verbal reasoning, comprehension or logical reasoning as computer tests. Then we were given a topic and had to write an essay on it (can't remember the kinds of topics... feels like 50 years ago :) ).
So I'd focus on maths and basic essay writing and maybe, if you could find any, some basic IQ/Mensa type problems (year 7 level of course).
Oh, and the writing part resembled the old ICAS writing competitions (ie "Do you think smoking should be banned?") but other than that, it was quite different from those competitions.

Assuming you mean entrance into yr7:
I did the Uni High entrance exam test and also sat a Geelong Grammar test (passed both). The best way to prepare (without paying large amounts of money to companies) is to get books from Jim Coroneos publishing:

http://www.coroneos.com.au/view_details/100

Obviously there is no need to do/buy all of the above books, but getting one of each type (Maths, ReadingComp, General ability) probably gives a student a big advantage over everyone else.

For entrance into yr9, just prep like for selective schools (http://vce.atarnotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,40258.msg419181.html#msg419181)

From memory, the scholarship questions were a bit harder, but having a go at ICA/UNSW papers wouldn't do any harm (especially at the last few). The test is different to MHS/MacRob tests in that there is a General Ability section instead of VR & NR. (this is all from memory, things might have changed though)

There are plenty of preparation classes around - I did Hendersons and I would reccommend them, and also New Generation (although I think that's been changed up a bit...).  You CAN prepare for it to a limited extent, and yes, they are like both of the tests you've mentioned.  =)
