They do on Biggest Loser.
About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

I understand your need to carry home your books and back to school again; maybe its this idea that you might just get some work done if you have books in your bag (well, that's me, anyway). Also, i like working with books in front of me instead of a PDF: it's just easier on the eyes, you can highlight, and most importantly Facebook isn't on the other tab.

Handy hints:
1. Get a two shoulder strap bag (not those messenger bags). It has to fit nicely just above the small of your back. Make sure the shoulder straps aren't too loose or low or it'll cause back pain. Make sure it's no more than 35Litres. I have one of these:

Larger bag = greater temptation to put in more books.

2. Think ahead - if you think that the next day there will he a mountain load of books, then take some home today.

3. Get another smaller bag and put some books in there.

4. Use PDFs for larger textbooks like your methods stuff.

5. Use your school spares and do that work!

I used to carry a lot of my textbooks back and forth from school during the exam period.

Just make sure first of all your putting the straps from your bag on both shoulders (yeah i gave slinging it on one after i noticed i was waddling...) and try tighten/loosen the strap things untill you get a comfortable balance.

Look into getting a better built bag perhaps or one of those wheely ones?

I only walked to the bus stop which was idk... 500m with a bag like that though (up stairs which sucked), if youre walking home with it and dont live around the corner, i would consider stopping, you could do yourself some serious damage.

Or you could hope your back will toughen up and adapt eventually

Who would you complain to anyway? No one is really forcing you no offense or anything man.

(Edit: Just read what Readinya said. She has a good point, if you don't have chemistry tomorrow try leave that book at home till you have it next if you can or bring it home the day before then or something. Try be smart about what you carry when, i also did this.)

um... i used to carry a load.. but now it's better. I bought a folder and divided in compartments for my subjects and instead of taking the whole load of folders, i leave them at home and i only carry sheets that I'll be needing at school.
If you dislike pdfs.. and you don't mind killing some papers (not advocating deforestation) but.. you can photocopy your book-say 4 double sided pages in one A3?

hope that lifts a few kilos off.

+1, I don't carry any textbooks home (other than english novels -which aren't at all heavy), just my exercise books.

loseing ur body weight is my suggestion. Then you can carry books like me :)

If you are overweight, surely you'll hurt your back. otherwise so.

Haha, i don't know i was a pretty skinny guy and it still wasn't nice carrying all my books in year 12.

I thought having a larger body (taller, more muscle ect) would give you more room to spread the weight across as well

I injured my back today at school and its most likely cause of my heavy bag. On Avg I carry about a 20kg bag, should I complain?

Note: This is no troll, its serious.
What the hell? Have fun trying to win against whoever you are going to complain about if they didn't force you to carry that much - even if they did, I would still doubt your case.
