then add 3 ml of ethanol and 1 ml of glacial ethanoic acid
then 3 drops of conc.. h2so4 and heat the mixture
take it out and put it in 20 ml of cold water

I did a prac sac last week on making esters so I'm guess you're doing the same thing.

Questions on my sheet were:
1. What is the role of the concentrated sulphuric acid?
2. Name the type of reaction that occurs when esters form?
3. Why is the reaction mixture poured in cold water?
4. Suggest why each ester has a different smell
5 Comment on any sources of error in this experiment

3. The mixture was poured into cold water to show that it is insoluble in water. This is because an ester is generally non polar and therefore will not dissolve in water. It can also be used to indicate whether the esterification has also taken place. If the reaction did not take place you would not see the layer on top of the water as both ethanol and ethanoic acid are water soluble.
4. The different smells could be because since each ester has a unique structure it will also have a unique smell
5. A possible source of error could be that the reaction was not heated to completion and therefore the ester was not formed
