Hi I recently received my encountering conflict expository essay back. I'm not entirely sure that my result was correct for what i did as i was told I didn't write enough when I stuck to the word limits.
Prompt: A conflict's importance lies not in its causes, but in its consequences.
Conflict is an inevitable experience that all human beings experience, but it doesn't matter who started it or what events caused. What matters is the consequences of conflict. During a conflict people can become confused and unsure of what will happen if they attempt to withdraw themselves from the main issue. However, in some conflicts individuals can suffer as they assimilate back to what they know, or think they know. But, individuals who cause conflict don't think about the consequences, they just keep recruiting people to fight for them. This can then lead to prejudice about certain people, or races. All consequences are possible in conflicts and some might turn out better than others.
In some conflicts an individual may be scared to leave due to what the consequences could be. In some relationships people don't always see eye to eye, like William Thornhill and his wife Sarah (Sal) Thornhill. They wanted different things, William wanted to stay in Sydney and have land, while Sal wanted to get enough money to go back to London. Situations like this could lead to abusive relationships (physical, or verbal). People in abusive relationships could be afraid to leave as they are not sure what will happen if they do or how they will survive on their own. Even though William wasn't abusive to Sal, he didn't listen to what she wanted and was selfish. Sal threatened to leave William and get money to go back to London, but didn't as she was afraid to be on her own. There are many different relationships in this world, opposite sex, same sex and interracial. All of them can be good or bad and all of them can come with there own consequences.
In this day and age it's not unusual to see interracial couples together, but some people are still stuck in old ways and can be prejudiced to these people. During "The Secret River" readers see Thomas Blackwood befriend and starts a relationship with an indigenous women. If he did that in our time period majority of people would even bling an eye at what he is doing. Now, if we look back at the time period he actually started a relationship with this women, majority of people would think interracial relationships are bad, and very few would think that they are good. Blackwood suffered the consequences of trying to do the right thing in a conflict. The consequences were being judged by his peers, which lead to them thoughtlessly massacring indigenous people.
Most civillians would agree that majority of wars are started over seemingly trivial issues, and generally with no thought of the consequences. Most wars are started over greed, power and assumption. The Government just wants to appear stronger than another nation's Governments. This then leads to recruitment of innocent people who haven't done anything to go kill more innocent people because they may or may not support their country's Government. In wars like the Iraq war, America recruits Australia who had nothing to do with 9/11, just to fight for something we aren't involved in. We then have numerous Australians dying for a conflict they aren't involved in. It's similar to "The Secret River", numerous indigenous people died because the British assumed they were going to do something when they hadn't. After wars, massacres and watching innocent people die people for no reason, some individuals struggle to assimilate back to normal society.
In war many soldiers suffer from post traumatic stress disorder due to fighting for their country, or an ally of their country. While soldiers are on their tour of duty they can see many horrific things that they won't be able to forget. When they come back to normal society some soldiers have been known not to be able to go back to how they were before they left. William Thornhill didn't do anything in the massacre, but he saw many things he wouldn't be able to forget. After the massacre he would have struggled to return to normal life and not let his family know what had happened/ Many struggle to return to what they use to know and as a result of the conflict they may have to change everything they thought they knew.
There are many consequences that conflict can cause. Some may cause individuals to suffer continuously, reliving what they want to forget, Which can be caused by fighting someone else's petty conflicts. That can be started by prejudice, even if someone is attempting to do the right thing. However, some people may be afraid to leave a conflict as they are afraid of what other consequences may arise. Over all there is no amicable resolution to a conflict. That is why all conflicts have consequences.
Thank you for reading this. I'm happy for you feed back or criticism on what I have written.
