I took mine in, they just ask that you put it on the desk. That's my school though, others may be more strict.

I think that if you go by the strict letter of the law, most digital watches would not be allowed. From the 2011 VCAA-produced VCE Exams Navigator booklet (page 4),

"Stopwatches or watches with special functions such as an alarm or stopwatch are not permitted in the examination room".

This I think would rule out a high percentage of digital watches. So I guess analog watches, and digital watches that only tell the time would be allowed on your desk. That being said, last year, I took a digital watch in, set the stopwatch function, placed it on my desk, and nobody said anything about it.

Recently, I asked one of my senior co-ordinators about this issue, and she recommended that I strictly follow the rules, because some schools get audited for correct examination procedure, and they might check to see if this rule is being followed. I think that it's pretty handy to have a stopwatch, but I guess there is some element of risk. I'm still hoping it's one of those rules that is never policed.

Just take it in, and leave it on the normal time function. Just remember well enough what time you started and are due to finish, as well as rough time increments such as every half hour and you'll be fine!

This is what I did last year:

1) 'Buy' two analogue watches from The Reject Shop.
2) Set both watches to: 12:00 - exam length (exam goes for two hours, set watch at 10:00)
3) Know that exam finishes when both hands point to 12
4) Return watches to reject shop at end of exam period and receive full refund.

That way I get timer function on an analogue watch!

As a side note, in three of my exams one of the watches stopped working (so take two!)

But yeah, I don't reckon they'd give a crap if you had your digital watch on timer setting. Most of the examiners seem pretty chilled.

As long as it doesn't beep stupidly (ie. don't set your alarm half way through your exam) or have a calculator function or something, I used mine (and I used the stopwatch function, just like most of my mates).
