Extra activities in Year 12
« on: July 10, 2008, 07:57:55 pm »

Ever since year seven, I have competed in school sports; whether it is indoor cricket, softball, badminton, volleyball, soccer, athletics. From years 7 through to 10, I haven't had to worry about missing school a whole lot but for the past two years I have questioned whether missing school would actually hinder my learning (to some extent). This is due to the fact that Interschool school sport in years 11 and 12 are an all day event, therefore, I would be missing out a whole day of school. Would missing so many days add up? I am usually in at least 5 out of these 6 teams each year.

My question - do you think extra activities restrict learning? Do you think it is wise/worth continuing these activities, especially in year 12? My issue is with sport, but I think some of you guys can relate to others things such as debating, magazine committee (which I am also in, but is not so much a problem), as well as other events.

No, they help if anything.
They allow you to not always focus 100% on work and get burned out, balance is the key!

I've done school sports every year, and I'm not stopping just for year 12. I have cut down a bit, to only doing the ones im really interested in, but this year already missed about 5 days of school because of sport.
It's easy to catch up as long as you check with the teacher what you miss, and get the notes of a classmate.
It's really helpful to have sport mixed in as well!
Balance is good!

wrong. In order to achieve 99.xx or high ENTER you must:

- never leave home (only for school, duh)
- make sure parents are forcing you to study even when you are softly studying (reading english book)
- throw away mobile phone (prevents friends/prank callers who do indian accents from disturbing you)
- sound proof room to prevent noise from distracting you when you are studying (remember silence is golden)
- go to school and study like your life depended on it, during lunch and recess don't socialise - go to back of the school oval with your books and study, also pretend you are smoking so the smokers who are there don't think you are doing something that gives them an incentive to bash you
- have a tight timetable for yourself (e.g. 9am-3pm is school, practice exams, 10th reading of The Kite Runner then home 3:02pm - 2am is re-study unit 3 then finish unit 4 (all within term 2) or something like that)
- have a small slide beneath your bed room door for food to come in and out when you are studying and need two minute food break
- ensure you have a 'lock-down' plan in the weeks leading to the exams e.g. deadbolt the bedroom door to prevent yourself from going out and people coming in or have a sign outside on your door with something like "LISTEN I AM TRYING TO GET A 99, IF YOU WANT ME TO BE A DOCTOR OR A LAWYER DONT TALK TO ME, DONT TOUCH THIS DOOR AND DONT TRY TO COMMUNICATE WITH ME" - it tells them you are serious about the 99
- the words 'friends' and 'family' do not exist to you anymore, the only friends and family you now have are: English 2008 for Year 12, Essential Mathematical Methods 3+4, Chemistry Units 3+4 and so on and so fourth. You are allowed to give them names if it makes it easier
- Fun and VCE are two mutually exclusive events. So are Fun and Studying.
- set small yet achievable goals like 20 practice english essays on 1984 by tomorrow, 18 practice exams for specialist after today and know every single Bruce Dawe poem off by heart in the book Sometimes Gladness in 24 hrs.
-allow very small sleep time because this keeps your brain under strain and constant pressure, it serves as a reminder that 99 requires staggering effort.
- to prevent thoughts like "I'll settle for a 98" or "Medicine only needs 98.4" or "I might do Arts instead of Law/Commerce", have a knife on hand so that in case of thoughts like that, it's one slit on the wrist.
- if you do not get 99.xx but 98.9 then suicide, hope to reincarnate as a smart kid and do VCE again til you get 99.xx with the same plan.
