ethlyene apparently does so, not absciisc acid..

http://www.biology-online.org/11/10_growth_and_plant_hormones.htm check it out under ethylene...

i wrote ethlylene but friends said it was abscisic acid!

this is what wiki says

Abscisic acid owes its names to its role in the abscission of plant leaves.

It (ethylene) acts at trace levels throughout the life of the plant by stimulating or regulating the ripening of fruit, the opening of flowers, and the abscission (or shedding) of leaves.

so i think it might be both

Hmm...my Biolnotes states that Abscisic acid causes abscission in leaves and fruits, while ethylene promotes abscission of flowers and leaves. :S

The heinemann textbook says the effect of ethylene is leaf and fruit drop in a table, but somewhere else it says abscisic acid has a role in the abscission of fruit.. But then again, heinemann's a piece of crap :|

Edit: Biozone also says abscisic acid induces fruit fall. I think abscisic acid should be correct..

It has only recently been discovered that absiccic acid does not infact cause the leaves to fall off. However, as it is published under the current study design that it DOES - VCAA HAS to accept the answer. Wikki and all other resources will cite that abscisic acid isn't involved. So relax :)

So there'd be two answers?

Yes, I think they'll have to. My teacher and an independent lecturer said they would - but they also laughed off the idea VCAA would ask the question after the recent discovery.
