What do you do in year 12 media?
Should I be doing it if I don't enjoy photography?

Photography is just one of the things you can do in media. You can also choose to do film, animation, radio/audio, print (magazine etc.). I think there is another category you can choose to do.

With media at my school (in both year 11 and 12) you create a major piece (using the medium of your choice) for the year. On what and how you do your major piece is up to you. The first two terms are spent putting together a folio of planning documents (scripts, storyboards, brainstorming etc.) and then in third term you do the actual production. There's a fair bit of theory (essay writing etc.) and film analysis.

We've done a fair bit of film analysis, usually relating to the area of study (in Unit 1 it was representation; my teacher specifically chose representation of teenagers). We also produced our own representation of teenagers (I made a short 5 minute film). We've had a couple of essays to write as well. One of them was analysing a film poster of our choice.

My teacher has said it's structured exactly the same in Year 12. You have a major piece of your choice to do throughout the year and there are also segments of theory stuff and other activities dispersed through the year.

However, from what I've heard it varies heavily from teacher to teacher. Some teachers restrict you a lot while others give you a lot of freedom when it comes to production stuff. Others would approach the theory in a different manner etc.

Edit: To answer your question, you don't have to do photography at all if you don't want to.

It seems as though the major piece would be very time consuming; I also doubt i'll enjoy it :\. However I don't mind the theory, should I be doing media?

Do it only if you think you'll enjoy it, not just for the sake of it being similar to photography.

I personally loved media, it was my favourite subject. So spending countless hours storyboarding and planning and shooting and editing my major production wasn't bad, it was enjoyable most of the time and very rewarding. I also think the theory aspect is quite interesting and actually enjoyed learning about the various aspects of narrative, and how the media influences us, and of course social values across different times periods. There's only three parts to the exam. Narrative, social values and media influence.

So if you use your time well, you can really nail them :) I would definitely recommend this subject. Perhaps try to switch into unit 2 media for semester 2? To get an idea of it. Although I know personally for me, year 11 media was quite different to the standard/level of work expected in year 12.

I just don't have any knowledge of how to put together film/ photography/ animation...
Could you please describe/show your major production, so I can have some idea of what it's all about?

Well basically your major production consists of three phases: pre-production, production and post-production. In the first stage you need to plan everything about your film, this means choosing your music, choosing your actors, writing a script, developing a storyboard (this is basically a drawing and annotation of every single shot in your movie - very very long process to make one), writing a treatment (this is basically your proposal for your film), and a few other things. Basically you have term 2 to make this entire folio. It's a pretty long process.
Then in phase two you're actually filming everything. You do this in your mid year holidays. In the final stage you edit your production, this takes a VERY long time. And so your production should be completed in the middle of term 3 approximately. I'll PM you a link to my production from youtube now :)

That page has links to youtube videos of some of the films that got into Top Screen. Quite a lot of people upload their films onto Youtube, so searching 'VCE Media' or 'Top Screen' in YouTube should come up with quite a few.

This one has links to pictures of people's production design plans, including some of ones that got accepted into Top Screen. There's a few PDPs for photography and print in those ones.

Of course, the Top Screen films are the ones that were deemed to be the best and would have been the result of A LOT of hard work.

Again, I'm only currently doing Year 11 media, but I can agree with Slumdawg with that media is heavily time-consuming and it'd probably be a huge struggle to do the work if you don't enjoy it. However if you do enjoy it's possibly the best VCE subject you could ever do.
