Double degrees have the same workload as a single degree in terms of subject per semester. The only difference is that you do an extra year or so of study.

No, you'll be still doing the same load as the single degree students, its just that you'll have to stay at uni for longer.
Some snippets of what goes on in IRC:

Are you scared yet?

Better to be looking at the actual degree's course structure: http://mams.rmit.edu.au/eolprogsummaries/bp065engdd (PDF)

Due to the fact that it is only 1-2 years longer, and you do the same amount of courses per semester, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that you won't be able to do as many elective subjects.

For example, if a single degree lets you do 50% of courses from other faculties, in a double degree you won't be able to do as many. It will mainly be subjects from the faculty of your degree.

In employment prospects, it's probably better to excel at one field, and gain strong development in that particular field. But with a double degree, I guess you have experience in more areas, and hence, more job opportunities. It really depends on your taste I guess.

Actually, you often sacrifice electives to do double degrees in the apparent shorter timeframe...in that you 'double dip' units from each other's courses to meet each other's unit requirements in terms of electives.

It means that you have two relatively focused degrees, but not much degree of breadth in study.

I woulds ay that the year's extra experience would be better off, in the context of doing two degree separately. Depending on your combination, having a double degree can mean a LOT (e.g., you're basically guaranteed jobs if you've got a Commerce / IT degree but not so much Arts / Commerce).

There were some stats about double degree being > than single degree for job opportunites.
I think it was the time it took for someone to get a job once outta uni, and the graduate income was higher for double degree students wasn't it? Surely someone remembers...

Again, it depends on the industry and the double degree pair.
