i find it quite unique actually, in the sense that technology is changing and we should adapt to it not only outside the test, but also during the test. i also find it quite interesting, where it states that, "In their working lives, these students will never need to carry enormous amounts of information around in their heads." I find that to be true and many of us won't even have to learn as much in the work force. It's just a matter of being able to think quickly rather than who can store the most.

Pathetic, this undermines the whole reason for exams. Examination time is not a time when you rely on others, its a time when you have to rely on yourself - an important skill that is crucial later on in life.

when is it crucial? when your working on a large project and have access to EVERYTHING around you? or is it cruicial when your asked to find it what someone is suffering from (note: it is shown that many doctors do actually use google as a site of reference.http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/2006/1784829.htm) You don't see med hopefuls being able to use it.

but that's just my view. However it may result in english being marked very harsh and scaled down very badly.

Wouldn't it be possible to go all the way through school, learn nothing but grammar, but still be able to pass with flying colours? It's good to practice research skills but don't assignments and projects already serve this purpose? The exam serves as a measure of how much you have learnt during your school years. It ensures that graduating students don't have hollow heads. Anyway, this system is too easy to abuse and that alone is its downfall.

that is quite true... but think of this in terms of 30 years time. Do you really think people will the normal exam paper as a means of testing. I don't think so. technology will take over and it's better to adapt now then later.

It's less stupid than it sounds.

That said it would only work in certain subject areas (definitely not maths!) where the goal is NOT to regurgitate information and concepts, but apply other skills based on it.

It just takes a leaf out of the current state of Law exams (more or less open book).

Besides, if you don't know your stuff - you're at a time disadvantage as you'd need to look stuff up.

lol yeah the first thing I thought was hello, they're already doing this in the law faculty where the emphasis is not on regurgitating info but on the skills of analysis and application etc.

And they sort of do it in VCE maths ... what with the bound notes and stuff. It'd be damned hard to control what happens with technology though and I agree it definitely won't work with maths or sciences

Hehe, I can just imagine it all now... There is me, sitting in the back of the room, having a brilliant idea in my mind, whilst over here I can hear a girl crying to her tutor over not knowing how to do maths, a girl over there yelling just for the sake of it, and guys everywhere talking to their girlfriends, which has no relevance to the exam at all, all whilst everyone is clicking away at their laptops, and did I just see a Nintendo DS over there, with incessant noise controls? Before you know it, that idea has long vanished out of my mind.

Everyone, welcome to the future! ;)

Open book + possibly nternet, yes. But the opportunity to talk to a guru on the subject via phone and get the question answered for you? What an ABSOLUTE joke.

they would have to change the exam questions to cater for this change.
