Questions about ANU

  Another Q.  What proportion of Bruce and Burgmann residents are 18? [Because if a large majority were, that would be a negative factor, no offence ] Are there many ppl in their early to mid twenties?

Eriny/Humphdogg - what sorts of things do you think they are looking for in a PHB application?

Proof that you can get a HD average at a university level and proof that you are academically inclined. A very good letter of reference goes along way (I was told after I got an ENTER under 99 that my app was still under consideration because my letters were impressive). Also, are you the one doing UMEP linguistics? If so, make sure you send them your transcript once you get it. You won't be able to send it with your initial application, but you can fax over the extra information later.

I think something like half the residents are first years? Something like that, anyway. Heaps of people move out before second year. Still though, there are later years and postgrads all over the place. In my group of friends, the average age is probably about 20, ages ranging from about 18 to 25.

I don't know for sure when the UAC preferences have to be in, but I think it's close to the VTAC date. You'll have to check the website.

I think you put your selections in first, then you pay, although you won't be considered for any places unless UAC has received your payment.

Apply for accommodation as soon as you finish your UAC application. You can do this online on the ANU website.

There's a reasonably large range in age. There are usually a lot of first years (80-100?), quite a few second years (40-50), remaining third years (30) and fourth+ years (25). But the age range varies quite significantly - in my first year intake last year, the youngest was 17 turning 18 half-way through the year, and the oldest was 20 turning 21. A lot of people have taken gap years.

Another question about the PhB. If you don't get selected for it are there any opportunities during first year or the beginning of second year for you to join the program? If so would you have to be doing a straight arts course or would you be able to transfer from a combined course (eg arts/law).

Two of my friends transferred from Arts/Law into PhB Arts: one after 1st semester, one after 2nd semester. Their marks were both quite impressive (80 average for Arts, 65+ average for Law).

probably not a big deal for a lot of people over there because you probably have heaps to keep busy butt i watch heaps of tv and need my weekly fix of shows like prison break and stuff so my question is, since it's not going to be feasible downloading those shows weekly because ill be racking up a huge bill with the anu charges...are there any 'free spots' at campus where i can get those downloads done or is my only other option to sign up with a wireless broadband provider?

I don't go to ANU (yet), but I don't think there are free spots (unless the library is free? - but they wouldn't let you download lots. Also, you get 10MB free per day in computer rooms, I think, but that's hardly going to help massive downloads).

However, there's still access to a television, and you can always get TV reception on your computer.

Probably best for someone who actually goes to ANU to answer this, actually...

Nah, you have to go straight into first year. However, you can accelerate courses - I went straight into second year maths because I'd done UMEP maths, which was the equivalent of MATH1115 at ANU. There are first year PhB kids at my college who did the International Physics Olympiad last year (i.e. ubergeniuses) and so are only doing 2nd year physics and maths courses - they skipped all the first year prereqs.
You can accelerate PhB enough such that you can do honours in your third year, even - I could do honours next year if I wanted to, because I've done so many advanced maths courses, but I'd rather just do another year of undergrad study so I get to do lots of independent research stuffs and hopefully go on exchange in second semester.

There used to be a downloading network between all the colleges at ANU, but it got shut down by some Australian piracy watchdog earlier this year

But anyway, some people go home over the weekend and download new shows, so they bring them back to college and you get it off them by putting it on an external hard drive.
You can also download using college internet credit (you buy however much you want - 1c/mb, so probably $3-7 an episode of a TV show, depending on its file size). Not particularly feasible. You can use wireless, but ANU get shitting if you go on epic downloading sprees using wireless. And yeah, you get 10mb a day internet quota from ANU, but it's not really feasible to use that to download much...
There are TVs at colleges too, so you can watch stuff there, but obviously only when it comes out in Australia.
Wireless broadband provider sounds kinda pricey and complicated to me.

Anyway, I'm heading back to Melbourne today and plan to get some uberdownloading on when I get home due to free internet (well, free in that I don't have to pay for it).

I have a TV card on my computer, also some people have little TVs in their rooms, but those people tend to have double rooms, so they have enough space for it.

Not necessarily - my neighbour has my old room, which is just a normal-sized Bruce room, but he has a massive TV sitting on top of his fridge so we can all play Wii It depends on how you set up your room.

hmm i guess im going to have to wait until i get back home/befriend people who get the downloading done ASAP (if im going)
with the wireless thing, that's not free is it? like it is (i think) at Monash/Melb uni etc
also im a bit confused with the quota stuff, if ANU gives us 10mb to use a day...is that counted in the amount of internet you use at your college? hope that made sense..

im definitely thinking of taking a tv if im going, hopefully ill get a ps3 by the end of this year...ill need a tv to play that

and one more question, i really want to get into bruce, sounds the best of the lot. i haven't had the time to apply yet tho, am i going to be disadvantaged, in terms of getting in there, because ive kinda left it this late (even though the closing date is still ages away)?
